Costco Wildbrine Raw Organic Sauerkraut Review

Sauerkraut is not only delicious (at least to some people!) – it’s also amazing for gut health. It’s loaded with probiotics and it’s really nutritious. Today, I’m going to tell you all there is to know about the Costco Wildbrine Raw Organic Sauerkraut!

The Costco Wildbrine Raw Organic Sauerkraut has been at my local warehouse for quite a while. I actually reviewed it a while ago and decided it was time for an update now (spring 2022). Other foods loaded with probiotics from Costco include the Costco GTS Raw & Organic Gingerade Kombucha, Costco Greenhouse Organic Probiotic Lemonade and the Costco Kirkland Signature Organic Greek Yogurt.

Location in Store

You can find this sauerkraut in the refrigerated deli section at Costco, near the fresh pasta and cheese. The item number is 1098785.

Taste

This is flavorful! I’m not sure if it’s in a good way though, as it’s pretty strong tasting! If you don’t know what sauerkraut is, it’s fermented, salty green cabbage. The sauerkraut is very tart, salty and also has a pretty noticeable garlic flavor.

Ready to eat!

The texture is slightly crunchy and not soggy or gooey. A small portion is enough for me because it’s so flavorful!

Cost

For the one-and-a-half-liter container of sauerkraut, the price is $11.49. That’s amazing because I’ve seen this at some specialty grocery stores for much more.

I really appreciate the use of BPA free packaging!

Convenience

The Wildbrine Sauerkraut needs to be kept in the refrigerator and the best before date is about seven months from the date when it was purchased. The container is a bit large, so by the time you’re at the bottom of your sauerkraut, you’ll need an extra-long spoon.

Sauerkraut can be used in a variety of ways. It’s well-known as a hot dog condiment or a sausage side, but you can also have it with chicken, burgers, sandwiches, etc. – basically however you like. I know a lot of adults like sauerkraut, but I’m not so sure about kids!

Nutrition

Calories

Two tablespoons contains five calories, zero grams of fat, 260 milligrams of sodium, one gram of sugar, one gram of fibre, two grams of carbohydrates and 0.4 grams of protein. This is really, really low in calories, fat, carbs and sugar! You can enjoy a lot of sauerkraut without feeling much guilt, unless you’re watching your sodium intake.

  2. I buy this on a regular basis. A container lasts a long time for me. The price is good for such a high quality product. I add a tablespoon or two as a topping with my mixed green salad or as a side when I have a beef frankfurter. Sauerkraut is so healthy for your GI and immune systems.
I have made my own Sauerkraut before and it turned out perfect. But, you have to buy the whole cabbage (and shred it), or buy bagged/shredded cabbage mix and wait a few days for the fermentation process to happen.

My Costco has this often, but not always. When they do, it is usually on an end cap of the refrigerated section by the smoked salmon.

  3. Great product but the container leaks at the lid. A container has one and only job. To keep the product in and it fails miserably. To the producer please spend the extra few cents and get a proper container.

    • It’s designed that way it’s constantly fermenting which cause gas and the lid is designed to let it out sometimes leaking can occur but it won’t affect the quality as long as it’s kept properly refrigerated

  4. I’ve always loved sauerkraut and this is the best ever! I actually crave it and must be careful not to eat too much in one day.

Please, Costco, keep this product on the shelves all year round!

  5. costco stopped carrying it in Minnesota for now – saying it’s seasonal. Sad. I love it. 50oz for approx $13. Whole Foods sells 18oz for $7, so it’s more costly elsewhere

  7. Hi
I bought this Wildbrine sauerkraut several weeks ago. It’s delicious!!
I returned to Costco today to buy some more and to my surprise, it was not on the shelf?? I inquired and they couldn’t give me a clear answer? They say it might be discontinued….. then they say it’s not available now but we’ll be getting it in stock sometimes soon??
Anyway….. will check with another Costco tomorrow to see if I can get some better answers.

It’s the best sauerkraut I’ve eaten!!! Hope they get it back soon.

    • Our local Costco store in Woodbury MN says it is a seasonal product, which I can’t see why they say that, but look for it in your stores after the holidays maybe. We just checked ours today and they don’t have any either. I eat it for breakfast every morning mixed in my hard cooked eggs. So yummy! I buy it 6-50 oz. containers every time we buy. I was hoping I would get through the seasonal timeframe but I am on my last container so was trying to find it elsewhere.

  8. Yesterday I went to Costco in Windsor to purchase some more. It usually is an excellent product, but the cabbage in the top part of the jar looked iced up and FROZEN. The probiotic enzymes die if they frozen which won’t do anything to improve our gut bacteria if the bacteria in the cabbage is dead. It was very disappointing. Needless to say I didn’t purchase any.
Hopefully it was a one off mistake on Costco’s part. But once it thaws, what unsuspecting customer would know. Please prevent this in the future Costco.

  11. Other than making my own (which I’ve gotten lazy about doing), this is the real deal. I love this sauerkraut. Many people think fermenting in vinegar will give you probiotic benefits but it doesn’t. You have to ferment in salt water. Granted, you’re paying a lot for something that costs little to make, but you get a lot for your money. I hope Costco never stops selling this!

  12. Most supermarket sauerkraut is pasteurized and has no probiotic effect. Just the unpastuerized type like Wildbrine. If it needs refrigeration it’s likely unpasteurized.
