Speculoos are spiced, crispy cookies that have gained popularity over the recent years. Originally from the Netherlands and Belgium, they’ve now made their way across North America, appearing in a wide range of products. The flavor of speculoos is similar to gingerbread, but with more spice and less of a molasses taste. I couldn’t resist picking up The Silver Crane Co. Winter Festive Houses Speculoos House Cookies, not only for the adorable tin they come in but also in hopes that they taste good too!

These are located in the Christmas / seasonal aisle at Costco near the Moritz Icy Squares and the Hawaiian Sun Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts. The item number is 1836619.
Taste
I noticed a fairly strong sweet and spice smell as soon as I took the lid off of the cookie tin. I actually thought they were gingerbread cookies until I read the label and saw they’re speculoos.
Most people are probably going to buy these cookies because of the beautiful tin they come in, but the cookies themselves are actually pretty solid! I thought they tasted a bit odd on my first bite, but they grew on me.
They’re extremely dry, crunchy and crumbly, but not too hard to bite into. I’ve had speculoos cookies before, but it was years so, so I can’t remember what they tasted like. I’d describe these ones as somewhat like a sweeter ginger cookie with more cinnamon and other spices than ginger.
These cookies are surprisingly enjoyable. I’d go so far as to say they’re mildly addictive. I tend to prefer softer cookies, but I was pleased to get some edible cookies with my beautiful tin that I’ll put out as a Christmas decoration for years to come.
Cost
The 345-gram tin of cookies costs $12.49 Canadian which isn’t bad considering you get the nice fancy cookie tin that can be used as Christmas decoration or reused for gifts or cookies for others.
Convenience
The cookies come in a cardboard box that’s sealed in plastic inside the tin. Once the cookies are opened there is no way to reseal the bag so I recommend popping them into a Ziplock. The best before date is eight months from when we purchased it.
These are great as a sweet treat with a mid-morning or afternoon coffee or tea! They’d be great on a dessert tray and I guarantee your colleagues would enjoy them if you brought them in!

Four cookies contain 130 calories, five grams of fat, 20 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, nine grams of sugar, two grams of protein and 130 milligrams of sodium. I’m totally satisfied with one or two of these, so 130 calories and five grams of fat and less than 10 grams of sugar for four isn’t bad at all!
Ingredients
The ingredients list isn’t very long but is still full of unhealthy ingredients like sugar, palm fat and rapeseed oil. The cookies contain egg, milk and wheat and may contain peanuts, soy and tree nuts.

They’re similar but these have more spice and are a bit warmer in flavor! They taste more premium and higher quality too.
