I’m not a stranger to gluten-free products so I figured The Grain Escape Hamburger Buns from Costco would taste like a typical gluten-free bread product. I suspected these would taste similar to the Little Northern Bakehouse bread, not amazing but not terrible either. I’m surprised by my reaction to these paleo, plant-based, low fodmap buns, they were much worse than I expected.
Location in Store
These buns are located in the bakery section at Costco and the item number is 1834902.
Taste
I regularly eat gluten-free hamburger buns, my go-to are the Little Northern Bakehouse ones so I didn’t think these would taste much different. I was wrong, these are terrible. They have zero flavor, they’re extremely dry and it tastes like you’re eating cardboard.
These buns have a bit of an odd bitter taste and the texture is oddly spongey. There are a bunch of better tasting gluten-free bun options available. These buns kind of remind me of the Carbonaut Bread and Bagels but they’re a worse product.
If you’re a gluten-free foodie my absolute favorite product from Costco is the Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers.
Cost
There are two bags of buns in the larger bag for a total of eight buns and I paid $9.99 Canadian which actually isn’t too expensive for a gluten-free product.
Convenience
The buns come in two bags, each with four buns in them. The best before date is about ten days from when I purchased them. Whenever I buy bread products I freeze them right away to help keep them from going stale.
These can be used for hamburgers or sandwiches, although they don’t taste great they do meet a lot of dietary restriction needs!
Nutrition
Calories
One bun contains 160 calories, six grams of fat, 39 grams of carbohydrates, 15 grams of fibre, three grams of sugar, one gram of protein and 270 milligrams of sodium. Although these are gluten-free and paleo they’re not exactly low in calories, fat, or carbohydrates.
Ingredients
The ingredients list isn’t very long and everything you see listed is pretty typical for a gluten-free bread product. These buns don’t contain any gluten, dairy or soy. They’re peanut and tree-nut free as well as grain-free, kosher, low Fodmap and Non-GMO.

I had planned to eat these the rest of the summer and use them for nights we barbecue burgers but sadly I just can’t force myself to eat these again.

These don’t taste good at all to me so I would say no.

We really like these buns! We’ve had gluten-free buns in the past that are either soggy or fall apart easily, but these are nice and firm. They didn’t seem to dry to me. They don’t have a very noticeable taste, but we prefer that, as we really want the taste of the burgers to come through.
I found the taste fantastic! Very good product!
