I’ve reviewed quite a few ready-to-heat and serve meals from Costco like the 44th Street Beef Pot Roast, Benjamin’s Traditional Pork Schnitzel, Del Real Foods Pork Carnitas, Kirkland Signature Smoked Pulled Pork, Chef Hak’s Spaghetti Squash Marinara, Rana Talgliatelle, Seasoned White Chicken & Mushroom Sauce and the Pulmuone Pad Thai.

Location in Store

We bought this meal while we were visiting Kona, Hawaii. It can be found in the refrigerated deli section, near the other refrigerated meals, cheese and deli meats. The item number is 951691.

Taste

If you’ve never had tikka masala before, it’s a traditional Indian dish that contains chunks of chicken, spices, herbs, tomatoes, onions and cream. I think this tikka masala is pretty tasty! It’s a very typical tikka masala with a minimal amount of heat. I was surprised by how little heat there is. I expected more.

I was a bit worried about the quality of the chicken because the pieces look a bit odd, but I was pleasantly surprised by how yummy the chicken was. It was very tender and I couldn’t find many poor-quality pieces. The seasonings used make this a very flavorful dish. There isn’t much heat, but there’s a ton of flavor.

Cost

There are two pouches of tikka masala in the 2.25-pound pack and I paid $14.99 USD, which isn’t too expensive for two meals!

Convenience

The tikka masala is already fully cooked. There instructions for microwaving the tikka masala and also for cooking it on the stove top. We decided to heat it on the stove top and it turned out great. I don’t think it would taste much different if you microwaved it.

The tikka masala needs to be kept refrigerated and the best before date is just over three months from when we purchased it. If you’re not going to use it right away you can freeze it and defrost it in the refrigerator overnight. This dish makes a quick, easy comfort meal on nights where you don’t have a lot of time or energy!

The meal doesn’t come with rice but you can easily cook up some rice to serve with the tikka masala.

Nutrition

Calories

A five ounce serving contains 180 calories, eight grams of fat, 490 milligrams of sodium, seven grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fiber, five grams of sugar and 21 grams of protein.

It’s a meal that’s low in carbohydrates until you add rice to it!

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty simple and contains ingredients you’d expect to use if you were making the meal from scratch. Instead of canola oil I wish there was extra virgin olive oil and maybe less sugar but those are my only complaints.

This contains dairy but is soy-free and gluten-free.

  1. I reheat one pouch of masala chicken with neutral ingredients of potatoes, carrots & celery. We shared it amount 4 members. Each pouch has a total sodium of 3,430 mg of sodium. Therefore each person shared 857 mg of sodium & that’s pretty good. We have meat & vegetables. Seriously, I ask for nothing more 😊
