Good cold brew coffee should be smooth, bold and less acidic/bitter than regular coffee. The question is, can a store-bought version like this Stok Cold Brew from Costco be really good? As someone who loves cold brew but doesn’t like spending six or seven dollars on it from a coffee shop, I had high hopes for this product. Will it pass for something made by your local barista?
If you like coffee, Costco actually carries a lot of different coffee products! Like the Starbucks Limited Editon Fall Blend Coffee Beans, Starbucks Winter Blend Coffee, Kirkland Signature Colombian Cold Brew, Level Ground East Africa Dark Roast, Salt Spring Coffee, Starbucks Caramel Macchiato Coffee Enhancer and the Starbucks French Roast Coffee Beans.
Location in Store
This cold brew is located in the refrigerated beverage section with the juices. The item number is 1657589.
Taste
I’ll start off by saying that I love cold brew and order it all the time when we go out for coffee in the summer. I will not be repurchasing this cold brew. If you like really watery, tasteless coffee, this is for you. It’s a medium roast but it barely has any flavor.
I also notice there’s a tiny hint of sweetness to the cold brew. Which is maybe coming from the “natural flavour” that’s listed on the ingredients list. If you add cream, milk or a non-dairy coffee enhancer to the cold brew it’s a bit more flavorful but I like my coffee black and bold tasting!
I wouldn’t say the coffee is gross, it just doesn’t taste like much. If acidic, strong or bitter coffees aren’t your thing you might enjoy this.
Cost
The cold brew costs $11.99 Canadian for two 1.42 litre bottles of cold brew. Which is way cheaper than going to any coffee shop to buy cold brew! It’s not as cheap as making it yourself at home though.
Convenience
The cold brew has an expiry date that’s about five weeks from when I purchased it and it needs to be kept refrigerated. You can add any cream, milk, non-dairy beverage or fancy creamer to the cold brew.
I don’t recommend serving it over ice as it’s already so diluted tasting! Cold from the fridge is my recommendation if you do happen to buy this.
Nutrition
Calories
One cup of cold brew contains 10 calories, zero grams of fat, two grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of fibre, sugar and protein and 10 milligrams of sodium. There also 90 milligrams of caffeine in one cup according to the bottle.
Ingredients
The ingredients list is short and sweet with coffee being the first ingredient. I don’t like that there’s the additive dipotassium phosphate and “natural flavour” added. If you make cold brew at home it’s just water and coffee.
