Costco Sogel Cioppino Review

If you like all varieties of seafood, this Sogel Fresh Cooked Cioppino might be for you! Cioppino is a seafood stew that combines mussels, clams, shrimp, fish, scallops and squid in a rich tomato broth. It seems like a dish that would be more at home on the menu of an Italian restaurant than on the shelf of a grocery store, so I was intrigued and a bit skeptical when I put it in my cart at Costco.

Location in Store

I bought this in Kona, Hawaii. From the refrigerated deli/meal section at Costco, near the fresh pasta and other refrigerated pre-packaged meals. The item number is 1371309. Although I bought this in Hawaii, it’s a product of Canada and I’ve seen it at my Canadian Costco.

Taste

I was a bit worried that the texture of the seafood wouldn’t be great but it’s really nice, not too tough and not mushy. The sauce has nice amount of fish flavor without being overtop/ The broth is very good, it’s salty and rich with a subtle fish flavor and is tomato based.

The shrimp might be a little overcooked but that might be due to us overcooking them. One thing I really want to point out is how much seafood is in this cioppino! It’s absolutely loaded with it. It’s all good seafood, there’s nothing gristly or really fishy.

The clams are delicious and don’t have any grittiness to them. The mussels have a nice flavor. Any seafood lover in the house would totally enjoy this.

Cost

I paid $17.99 USD for the cioppino which isn’t cheap but considering how much seafood it has, it’s a reasonable price.

One bag contains clams, broth and mussels and the other contains fish, shrimp, scallops, squid and seafood juice.

Convenience

There are three different ways you can heat the cioppino, in a frying pan, in the microwave or boiling it in the bag. The box recommends the frying pan method so that’s how we heated it and it turned out great.

The cioppino needs to be kept refrigerated and the best before date is a little less than two months from when we purchased it. I’m not sure I would freeze it because it might change the texture of the seafood. For serving suggestions, I recommend serving this with some fresh, crusty bread to soak up all the broth!

Nutrition

Calories

One cup of cioppino contains 185 calories, five and a half grams of fat, 930 milligrams of sodium, seven grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, two grams of sugar and 35 grams of protein. That’s a ton of protein for only 185 calories! The fat, carbs and sugars are all really low. The only thing that’s really high is the sodium!

Ingredients

I really appreciate the ingredients list, it’s short and simple without additives, artificial flavors or colors. The cioppino is gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free. If you’re allergic to shellfish or any other seafood you probably want to steer completely clear of this.

  1. Wow that sounds delish! My only hesitation is the high amount of salt but I know all processed seafood products has a lot. This is the first “must try” rating I’ve seen!
Cheers from Ontario and have a great long weekend 😎
