Costco Pulmuone Teriyaki Stir-Fry Udon Review

We enjoy eating stir-fry, but it’s a lot of work to make a good one! I was intrigued when I saw this Pulmuone Teriyaki Stir-fry Udon at Costco, particularly because it isn’t frozen (just refrigerated). Is this the easy home stir-fry hack you’ve been waiting for?

Today I’m reviewing the Costco Pulmuone Teriyaki Stir-fry Udon! I found this during a recent Costco trip and haven’t tried it so wanted to review it!

You can find the teriyaki stir-fry udon in the refrigerated section at Costco near the fresh pasta. The item number is 1603399.

Taste

Udon noodles have always been my least favorite kind of noodle due to their size and shape. They remind me of something that lives in the ground so I always prefer to get rice noodles or chow mein. I wanted to try this stir-fry from Costco despite my worry about the noodles turning me off the dish.

The stir fry is really tasty! The dried vegetables, sesame seeds and especially the teriyaki seasoning give it a ton of flavor. You really notice the teriyaki flavor and there’s a touch of heat as well. There aren’t many dried vegetables in the green packets, so they function more as added flavor and texture than a true vegetable component in the stir fry.

The udon noodles have a great texture.  They’re chewy, but not too soft and they’re very satisfying. There’s plenty of teriyaki seasoning to cover them well.
My only complaint about this stir fry is that it’s more of a noodle and seasoning base than a true meal, at least in my opinion. It needs more vegetables and some protein! I think there’s probably enough teriyaki seasoning that if you did add these things, you wouldn’t need too add additional sauce/seasoning, but I don’t know for sure.

It also wouldn’t be very easy too add vegetables and meat – it would kill the quick prep time. Maybe if you precooked some in a teriyaki marinade you could just mix them in?

Cost

The cost of this Costco stir-fry meal is $11.99 Canadian and that includes four packets of noodles, four packets of teriyaki seasoning and four packets of vegetables. I think I’d rather pay a bit more to have meat and way more vegetables. For just noodles and seasoning this is a bit expensive.

Convenience

I cooked my noodles using the stove-top method because I was skeptical about how well a stir fry would turn out in the microwave. It was still really easy to do. I was surprised at how short the recommended cook time was. I ended up cooking my stir fry slightly longer, about four minutes total. It was nice and warm when I finished, but if you want it piping hot, you might want to cook it a little longer.

The green packet that you add in at the beginning has some dried vegetables and sesame seeds. The orange packet that you add in later on is the teriyaki seasoning. The teriyaki seasoning gives it a nice color in addition to adding flavor.

The best before date is about a month from the date I purchased the stir-fry from Costco and it needs to be kept refrigerated.

Nutrition

Calories

For one packet of noodles, teriyaki seasoning and vegetable topping combined there are 370 calories, six grams of fat, 72 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, nine grams of sugar, seven grams of protein and 820 grams of sodium. The sodium is a little high or someone watching their intake. Also the carbs are high for someone who is on a low carb diet.

Ingredients

I find it interesting that there’s so many different kinds of fish in the sauce! This is definitely not gluten-free so anyone who is Celiac should steer clear. Both the noodles and sauce are full of unhealthy ingredients and ones that sound very chemical based to me.

Convenience: 7 on it’s own, lower if you add stuff.

Nutrition: 1/10 (needs protein and some real veggies).

The Costco Pulmuone Teriyaki Stir-fry Udon is great as a base, but needs extra vegetables and protein to make it a complete meal. .

  1. The packaging is deceptive advertising. 0.2 oz of vegetables are 3 dehydrated peas and chunks of carrot. Sauce is 0.4 oz cornstarch and food coloring. Udon was ok, but had to be pulled apart by hand. Stovetop cooking instructions do not work – vegetables and sauce should be rehydrated for 10-20 min before adding to noodles. To make it edible, add at least 8-12 oz of frozen stir-fry vegetables

  2. Well I bought it, and love it. Cooked it on the stove and it came out delicious. Went back today to buy more and they did not have anymore. I’ll keep looking.

  3. I love the taste of the powdered teriyaki so much better than the liquid. Its good just the way it comes, but you can always add to it as you please. It has not been available at Costco in Daton, Oh. for a while now. Can u bring it back?

  4. I bought this for my husband and froze it when I got home.
    I made it in the microwave and added it to a vegetable and chicken stir fry I made on the stove. My husband loved it, I’m not a fan of the noodles as the to remind me of crawling things outside.
    Freezing it didn’t do any harm, I thawed the noodles before microwaving them. I followed directions on the package.
    I will likely buy them again.
    Just bought the s’mores in the bag. Delicious but very dangerous to keep near by for fear of eating them all.

  5. I made this in my microwave and added it to chicken and veggies that I had stir fried. I don’t like the noodles because of shape and size. My husband loved it.
    I put it in the freezer when I bought it and it worked out just fine thawing the noodles.

  6. I tried these noodles yesterday.
    They are so delicious. Very tasty and filling. I threw it together in 10 minutes. Great for dinner or quick snack. I would recommend for sure.

  7. Grateful for finding your review! There was no nutritional on Costco’s Canadian site, so as a vegan, glad you posted it. I would love to find some good noodles with plenty of veggies and protein, no matter your choice. Also, no unpronounceable ingredients!

  8. This stuff is really gross and stinky! The teriyaki powder contains fish and it smells very bad. Also the picture on the package is misleading as it is only a “serving suggestion”. There are only a few freeze-dried vegetables in the package, nothing at all what the picture looks like. I threw the whole thing away and will never buy this again!

    • Couldn’t disagree more! These are fabulous. Great price great taste. Hence, asian noodles stir-fry taste better when they have a fish oil in the ingredient. Also great to use as a starter. Adding more vegetables is also an option as I do.

  9. We are currently in Florida and I tried it here. We love it, and used it as a side dish for something else. I went back to get more and not only did they not have any, but customer service said they aren’t expecting any more! I am hoping they have them when we get back to Canada.

  10. The Teriyaki Udon Noodle by Pulmuone is disappointing and the worst thing I bought. The noodles no matter how you prepare comes out mushy gross, turns back into rice. I used some hot water in a pan for even 1 minute to defrost and loosen and still mushy bad. Then the small freeze dried pebbles of peas is barely a meal. Just buy rice and frozen vegetables and you will be happier. The package is pretty though. Costco needs to try this at home and take off the shelfs.

    • Hey Stephen, I tried it twice this week, and I cooked it on the stove top. The noodles did never turn to mush. I wonder what you did to achieve that! You need to add some water, even a little more than it tells you, and just add the noodles in after the water/broth is boiling. Cover and simmer for 3 or 4 minutes, stir once or twice lightly, done. The peas were quite hard the first time. Second time, I put them with the water in a little bowl and nuked them for 3 minutes. Then I added that to the spice and oil mix, with the water, and the noodles. All went well!

    • You’re not supposed to boil the noodles as they aren’t frozen. In my experience of following the recipe as directed, and as all the other reviews indicate, we think they are delicious. I do agree that more veggies are needed, so I just add the kind that I like.

    • I really enjoyed the Udon Teriyaki Noodles! I thought it was tasty, easy and super convenient. Not sure why your noodles are mushy, but as soon as I read the word “defrost” in your comment, I thought maybe that’s where the issue is. I don’t believe you’re supposed to freeze it. The packaging says “Keep Refrigerated”. Just a thought.

  11. I stir-fried it and added cabbage, shiitake mushrooms, green beans, carrots, and garlic (+evoo, soy sauce, white pepper). Green onions and jalapeños on top. Also served with egg rolls. We didn’t use the freeze dried veggies it came with. It was pretty good. I’d definitely buy this again, especially when on sale!
    It came with 4 packets and we cooked 2, for 2 adults. With adding all the veggies, it yielded enough for leftovers tomorrow.

  12. I really liked this; good flavor; good chew on the noodles. But to make it a more complete and satisfying meal; first time I added steamed broccoli and leftover pork. Second time I added steamed carrots and broccoli and sautéed shrimp. Both times I used 1/2 T of sesame oil to sauté the noodles.

  14. Yes! I recently tried the Pulmuone teriyaki udon noodle entree. I thought it was yummy. And don’t think you’ll ever find anything to make that is any faster. I, like you, wanted more protein and veggies. I also wish it was available in more stores. I don’t always want to or feel like going to one of the big box club stores. The second time I made this for myself I cut up some store-cooked chicken (white meat chicken beast from Sprouts rotisserie chicken) and it made a huge difference towards making it a complete meal. If only I’d had some broccoli and carrots I could have cut those up in small bite size chunks for faster cooking time just prior to prepping the stir fry upon noodles. I will be using this product again very soon so I will be making sure to have ingredients on hand to prepare with it..I think it’s a great way to have a warm home prepared meal when you’re not up to cooking. It took 4 minutes from package to my bowl!

  15. I’m a big fan of these for its convince, for easy protein I add a hard boiled egg or two and marinate it in some soy/chilli flake mixture.

  16. We tried this just this past week and really enjoyed it.

    I, too, questioned the amount of veggies and lack of protein … to make it a meal and not just a side dish. Solved this by adding some freeze-dried* peas, freeze-dried* green onions, and a can of the Costco chicken chunks, plus 2T water.

    This did not add much time to the cooking process … perhaps 2-3 minutes … the chicken ‘shredded’ itself while stir frying the noodles.

    * We freeze-dry our own foods.
