Italian sausage, tomato, and grilled pepper sauce with penne—sounds delicious, right? I thought so too, which is why I grabbed this O’sole Mio pasta meal from Costco. Just a heads up, though: be sure to check the ingredients carefully, especially if you’re not a fan of olives. The sauce is packed with chunks of Kalamata olives, which caught me by surprise! Still, I ended up enjoying the meal, despite the unexpected olive twist.

Taste
We had this with my parents and everyone really enjoyed it! If you have a strong dislike for olives you might want to skip this meal though because it has olives all throughout the sauce.
There’s a mild to medium amount of heat in both the sauce and sausage, nothing too extreme though. The sauce is pretty flavor and you can taste a noticeable hint of red pepper. The flavor of the olives also comes through in the sauce.
I don’t usually love kalamata olives but I didn’t mind it in this sauce as much as I thought I would. The sausage is really nice and not overly seasoned so it complements the pasta and sauce. There’s also a decent amount of sausage in the dish.
The pasta is a bit chewy but not in a bad way more in an al-dente kind of way. It’s actually quite delicious tasting pasta. If you really dislike the olives you can pick them out and the flavor in the sauce isn’t too strong.
Cost
The 1.158 kilogram package costs $16.99 Canadian regularly but I was able to get it four dollars off so only paid $12.99 Canadian which is a really good deal.
Convenience
The package comes with everything you need, pasta, Italian sausage and a bag of sauce. There are two bags of sausage, one bag of pasta and one bag of sauce and a tray to cook it in. The best before date is exactly one month from when I purchased the meal.
There are only microwave cooking instructions on the package, there’s no pan or oven instructions. I don’t mind though because microwaving is so convenient! This meal is so convenient, dinner was on the table within 11 minutes.
I’m not sure if kids will enjoy this though due to the spice and olives. I’d say it’s more of an adult meal.

A 300 gram or one and a half cup serving contains 460 calories, 23 grams of fat, 46 grams of carbohydrates, five grams of fibre, nine grams of sugar, 20 grams of protein and 1290 milligrams of sodium. That’s quite a bit of sodium and the meal definitely isn’t low in calories, fat or carbs.
I do like that there’s 20 grams of protein in one serving. Protein keeps you full for longer and helps reduce the blood sugar spike from carbs only.
Ingredients
The ingredients list is pretty short and sweet with simple, whole ingredients. I love that they use extra virgin olive oil in the sauce. The pasta meals contain wheat and the sauce does contain white wine if you’re avoiding alcohol. The sausage is also made with pork if you’re someone who doesn’t eat pork.
