Costco Moritz Icy Squares Review

If you smooth, cool, creamy milk chocolate that melts effortlessly in your mouth sounds appealing, you’ll adore these Moritz Icy Squares from Costco. For an extra bit chill, you can keep them in the refrigerator to slow down how fast they melt. Will these be making it onto your Christmas chocolate shopping list this year?

Location in Store

These are located in the Christmas/seasonal aisle at Costco near the Galerie Au Chocolate Milk Chocolate Cookie Butter Cups and the Swiss Delice Prestige Assorted Chocolates. The item number is 323700.

Taste

The Icy Squares come in red, purple and green wrappers, but they’re all the same. They’re solid and don’t have any sort of filling. The chocolate is very soft and melty – maybe that’s why they’re wrapped. They melt quickly in your fingers.

Based on the name and the cool and creamy description on the container, you might expect these chocolates to be minty like After Eight or something, but they’re actually fairly plain. They’re fairly creamy, but they’re not noticeably cool. If I didn’t know what I was eating, I might have thought it was just a plain milk chocolate. If I really try to look for it, I guess I can taste a bit of iciness, but it’s a stretch.

I thought it was interesting that hazelnut paste is an ingredient, because I didn’t notice any hazelnut flavor either. The chocolate is tasty and smooth though, so that’s the most important thing.

Cost

The one kilogram container has 90 chocolates in it and costs $14.99 Canadian which isn’t bad considering there’s a lot of chocolates in one container and each chocolate is pretty rich!

Convenience

The icy squares are individually wrapped which is nice because then they stay fresh and you can easily share them with others. The best before date is about 10 months from when I purchased them.

Icy squares are nostalgic for me because my parents always bought them as a treat for Christmas when I was growing up. These are great on their own but you could also incorporate them into holiday baking. My toddler liked them but only had a few nibbles because they’re so rich!

Nutrition

Calories

One square contains 60 calories, five grams of fat, five grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, four grams of sugar, one gram of protein and 15 milligrams of sodium. I was shocked to find out how low in calories, sugar and carbohydrates these are! One square isn’t necessarily small and tastes pretty sweet.

Ingredients

Of course there’s nothing healthy about these Icy Squares despite them being lower in calories and sugar. They have artificial flavors which I don’t love as well as soy flour. The Icy Squares contain milk, soy and hazelnut and may contain peanuts, sesame, egg, wheat and other tree nuts.

Overall

Give it a try!

If the idea of a soft milk chocolate is appealing to you, these Icy Squares are worth picking up. They’re pretty tasty even if I wouldn’t really call them icy!.
