Costco Leanfit Sport Plant Performance Protein Review

When choosing a protein powder, I look for something that’s low in calories, high in protein, nutritious, and tastes great. That’s a lot to ask for! The Leanfit Sport Plant Performance Protein from Costco checks most of my boxes, it’s packed with protein, low in calories and fat, and loaded with nutritious ingredients. The only question left is whether it tastes good, keep reading to find out!

Location in Store

This is located in the pharmacy/supplement section of the store. Near all the vitamins and other protein powders like the Organika Enhanced Collagen Protein and the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey.

Taste

I combined this with 250 ml water, and I have to say it definitely needs to be combined with more water or milk than 250 milliliters. With only 250 milliliters of water, it’s very thick and sweet, almost like a pudding.

Overall the flavor is extremely sweet with an artificial French Vanilla taste but it also kind of tasted like eggnog to me. You can definitely taste the artificial sweetener. I think the company could probably use a lot less sweetener; I find it too sweet but maybe it’s used to mask the plant-based flavor. I’m used to plant-based protein powders and I didn’t find this tasted too earthy.

I don’t mind the flavor, but I’d probably make it into a smoothie or combine it with a lot more water and ice to tone down the sweetness/flavor. I notice there’s a very slight tart cherry but I don’t taste the black pepper. In terms of texture, I found the powder mixed into the water really smoothly without any big chunks.

Cost

The two-kilogram bag of protein powder costs $58.99 Canadian at Costco, which isn’t bad in the first place, but I was able to grab a bag for $15 off. There are about 47 servings in one bag.

Convenience

The bag recommends using this in smoothies, oatmeal or yogurt or just having it on it’s own. Since the flavor is so strong and sweet I caution anyone mixing this with oatmeal or yogurt. I think the flavor of the oatmeal/yogurt will be totally overpowered by the protein powder.

Usually, I use protein powder like this to make a smoothie but I have used it in oatmeal as well. The best before date is almost two years from when I purchased it and the bag is resealable. The bag also comes with a measuring scoop inside for easy measuring.

Nutrition

Calories

One 42 gram scoop of protein powder contains 170 calories, five grams of fat, five grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, two grams of sugar, 30 grams of protein and 530 milligrams of sodium. The amount of sodium really shocked me, that’s quite a bit of sodium for something that tastes so sweet

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty short and sweet with ingredients you typically find in plant-based protein powders with a few additional unique ingredients! What I don’t usually see in protein powders is lactobacillus acidophilus, black pepper, tart cherry and turmeric root powder.

Black pepper, tart cherry and turmeric all have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Lactobacillus acidophilus is probiotic that can help improve gut health.

Overall

Give it a try!

I love the ingredients, love how much protein there is in one scoop but dislike how sweet it is and artificial tasting. It’s not great tasting but I love the nutrition facts, I think it would be best in a smoothie but that adds more calories etc.

  1. My first thought was, does it taste “beany”? Until I saw the ingredient list. Stevia to me has a strange and unique taste. Yuck. This is one of your reviews I love the detailed description of. Here for it!

  2. Thank you for your Costco reviews. A suggestion – since many Canadians are now trying to buy Canadian (and not US), could you also state in your review where the product is from? Thank you.
