Salted caramel in a muffin isn’t something I’ve tried before so these La Boulangere Salted Caramel Muffin Bites caught my eye when I saw them in the Costco bakery. I’m surprised they’re called muffins instead of cupcakes since they have lots of sugar and are filled with caramel! Do these sweet treats deserve a spot in your shopping cart?
Other bakery section products from Costco I enjoy are the Kirkland Signature Muffins, Kirkland Signature Cheese Buns, Kirkland Signature Almond Danishes, Kirkland Signature Gooey Cinnamon Rolls, Baker Boys Cinnaroll, Kirkland Signature Chocolate Lover’s Cookie Pack, Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake and the Kirkland Signature Ciabatta Buns.
Location in Store
These salted caramel muffin bites can be found in the bakery section at Costco, the item number is 1644583.
Taste
These are kind of an odd product! They’re called muffin bites, but for some reason they’re an oval shape. Each muffin bite has a blob of an almost liquid salted caramel in it, or maybe to blobs. It was hard to tell whether it runs through the whole center or if they’ve put some in each end – I think the latter.
Anyway, after I figured it exactly what these muffin bites are, I decided they’re not bad. They’re quite sweet and taste heavily processed (which is normal for packaged bakery items like this), but they pretty much deliver what they promise.
The muffin dough is moist and sweet. I would say it has a mild salted caramel flavor, but the filling is much more flavorful. As I said, it’s almost a liquid and very sticky! It seems to kind of seep through the tops of the muffins. It’s very sweet and has a decent salted caramel flavor.
I’ll be honest, I tend to dislike a lot of these packaged bakery items. I’d rather have something baked fresh that won’t last as long but isn’t loaded with all sorts of weird ingredients. With that being said, these muffin bites are pretty good if you like salted caramel (which I do!).
Cost
The 540-gram bag containing 18 muffin bites costs $12.49 Canadian which isn’t bad! The muffins aren’t super small, despite being called muffin bites.
Convenience
Each muffin is individually packaged so you can easily bring them to work or school. I looked and looked and couldn’t find a best-before-date on the muffins or the bag they come in. They’re a product of France and the bag states that they’ve been frozen and thawed previously so they should not be re-frozen. I tend to freeze a lot of foods that have already been frozen before.
I think kids will enjoy these and they’re also a nice treat to bring to work to share with colleagues!
Nutrition
Calories
Three muffins contain 390 calories, 20 grams of fat, 49 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, 21 grams of sugar, four grams of protein and 460 milligrams of sodium. Honestly, I can’t see many people eating three of these. I think one or two is enough so I find it a bit strange the nutrition facts are for three muffins.
Ingredients
Ah, no surprises here! These bites contain milk, wheat and egg. They may contain soy and tree nuts but there aren’t any actual peanuts or other tree nuts listed on the ingredients list.

Give it a try!
Since I’m a big salted caramel fan, I enjoyed these more than I thought I would.

Hi just thought I would mention the following re : refreezing. I had heard years ago that bakery items could be refrozen as they are all ready cooked. Things like fresh meat, fish and such that have been previously frozen should not be refrozen if not cooked. If anyone has heard differently on bakery items, I would like to know please. Thank you.
