Costco Kirkland Signature Variety Mini Donuts Review

When I think of somewhere to get delicious mini donuts, I don’t picture the Costco bakery. When I saw these Kirkland Signature Variety Mini Donuts I was both intrigued and skeptical. Could a packaged grocery-store bought mini donut really be tasty? I bought these reluctantly but was pleasantly surprised by how good they were!

I’ve tried and reviewed a vast majority of the sweet Costco bakery products. Some of the ones I love are the Peanut Butter Chocolate Cream Pie, Biscoff Cream Cake, Gooey Cinnamon Rolls, Banana Pecan Loaf, Palm Leaves, Almond Danishes, Chocolate Lover’s Cookie Pack and the Tuxedo Cake.

Location in Store

The donuts are located in the bakery section at Costco and the item number is 1817452.

Taste

I was a bit skeptical of these donuts because packaged grocery store donuts usually aren’t great, but I really liked these ones. I was especially impressed considering they were a day old when I bought them. I’d love to try a fresh box. That’s why I think these donuts might be made offsite. I suspect they’re deep fried like most good donuts.

Below are my thoughts on the three different flavors. They all have filling in the center. I found the filling tended to be pretty unevenly distributed in most of the donuts, but they still tasted great.

Chocolate hazelnut

The dough itself seems kind of in between a regular donut and a cake donut. It’s kind of a medium density. It doesn’t have a lot of flavor; the Nutella-like filling is the star. It tastes great and there’s enough of it that that’s basically all you taste.

Not too much filling but just enough!

Red berry

The dough is similar to the chocolate hazelnut in texture send density. It’s hard to tell, but I think it might be flavored a bit (it’s obviously colored). It tasted sweeter to me. Again, the filling is the main thing that you taste and it’s great.

I tasted it without knowing what the berry flavor was and couldn’t decide if it was raspberry or cherry. It’s actually both! Apparently it also contains strawberries, black currants and red currants. I think I could also taste those on later bites.

Real berry puree!

Apple cinnamon

I went back and forth on whether the dough was any different for this one. It seemed a bit lighter to me. However, the filling remains the most flavorful component. It’s kind of a cinnamon spice applesauce that’s good but sort of odd tasting (at least in my opinion).

The cinnamon sugar on the outside complements it well. If you’re a big cinnamon fan you may be interested in the Kirkland Signature Cinnamon Roll Mini Cakes!

Cost

The package comes with 24 donuts and costs $12.99 Canadian. These donuts aren’t cheap at over 50 cents a piece. However, they’re very tasty for a packaged grocery store donut and they’re also big for a donut hole type of donut.

There isn’t a ton of apple filling.

Convenience

I was excited to try these donuts as soon as I saw them, but my excitement was dampened a bit by the fact that all of the boxes seemed a bit messy. I tried hard, but couldn’t find one that still had the mini donuts sitting nicely in the box without any signs of being jostled around. I think that’s just something you have to live with as they’re probably not the easiest thing to transport.

I also thought it was interesting that the label says the donuts have been previously frozen. They also have a nutrition facts label on the package, which most Costco bakery items don’t wonder if they’re made in store or somewhere else. After tasting them, I think it might be the latter (and I say that as a compliment!).

The best before date is three days from when they were packaged but I highly suggest eating or freezing them as soon as possible. They’d be great at any gathering where the crowd likes donuts. I think that means just any gathering.

Nutrition

Calories

Two donuts contain 200 calories, 11 grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, 11 grams of sugar, three grams of protein and 135 milligrams of sodium. The donuts aren’t super small so this doesn’t seem that bad to me.

Ingredients

First I want to point out the positive ingredients in these donuts, because there aren’t many! The berry donut uses real sour cherry, raspberry, black currant, strawberry and red currant puree. The apple donut has apple puree as an ingredient too. I like that they use real fruit puree as opposed to artificial fruit flavors.

There’s a ton of unhealthy ingredients in the donuts, too many to list them all. Ones that pop out to me are the palm oil, rapeseed oil, sorbitan monosterate, sugars, flavour and dextrose. Anyone eating donuts usually knows they’re not the healthiest option and if they’re store-bought they’re more likely to be full of a lot of sugar, seed oils and additivies/preservatives.

Overall

Give it a try!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed these donuts! They’re not the best donuts I’ve tried but they’re pretty tasty and worth the price.
