Hands down the best bakery item from Costco!
It’s time to talk cake again! I’ve reviewed the Costco Kirkland Signature Tiramisu Cake and the Strawberry Shortcake. Today, I’m reviewing Costco’s Tuxedo Cake. At this risk of spoiling the rest of this review, I think this is the best cake that Costco sells!
Location in Store
The Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake can be found in the refrigerator in the bakery section at Costco. The item number is 23133.
Taste
First off, this cake does not taste like it came from a grocery store! I eat a lot of desserts, so I feel like I know my cake well. Costco’s Tuxedo Cake is nothing like those cakes you buy at your local grocery store. You know what I’m talking about – the ones that are dry and have artificial-tasting icing. This cake is rich, chocolatey and you can definitely tell it’s made from high-quality ingredients.
You only need a small slice of the cake to sink into sweet, chocolatey heaven. It consists of a few different layers. The bottom layer is a dense, bold-flavored chocolate cake. On top of that is a rich, creamy chocolate mousse with brownie pieces in it. Next up is a vanilla/white chocolate cream mousse. Sandwiched above that is another layer of chocolate cake. Topping it all off is a thick, smooth dark chocolate ganache. The top of the cake is decorated with cocoa nibs and chocolate sticks, which makes it very visually appealing on top of being extremely delicious.
I honestly love this cake so much that I’d rather have it than a cake from one of the top-notch bakeries that we have in my city! Overall, the Tuxedo Cake is sweet, rich and decadent. Some people might find that it’s too much, but personally, I can’t get enough of it and would happily have it as my birthday cake. It’s not too rich for me and I’m crazy about the smooth, creamy mousse!
Cost
At $16.99 Canadian, the price for the Tuxedo Cake is the same as for the Tiramisu Cake, which in my opinion is very reasonable. I could easily see this cake serving 10 – 12 people (with reasonably-sized slices), so that’s pretty inexpensive on a per-serving basis.
I’ll let you in on a secret. We’ve purchased a chocolate cake for $48 Canadian from a fancy local bakery – it’s one of their signature items. It’s really good, but not $30 better than this cake! Not even close! The Costco Tuxedo Cake tastes just as good as the fancy bakery cake to me.
Convenience
The Tuxedo Cake is as convenient as a product can be! It comes packaged in a rectangular plastic container that you can easily reseal after opening. The cake slices super easily and freezes wonderfully.
If you love this cake like I do, don’t feel like you need to wait for a special occasion to buy it. Just cut it into individual slices and then put the slices in sealed bags or containers in your freezer. I find a slice needs about half an hour to thaw before I want to enjoy it!
Nutrition
1/16th of the cake (a 77-gram slice or approximately half of what you see in the photo above) contains 280 calories, 17 grams of fat, 29 grams of carbohydrates, four grams of protein and 190 milligrams of sodium. That’s obviously not great, especially for such a small amount of cake, but I don’t think it’s any worse than your average cake.
One area where I can criticize the Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake a bit is the ingredients list – it’s long and full of artificial/chemical-sounding stuff. I have the recipe for the fancy bakery cake that I mentioned above and it’s pretty much just a list of things that you would expect: butter, sugar, cocoa, cream, etc. The worst things in it were small amounts of vegetable oil and corn syrup. There wasn’t anything listed that you would have to search for on Google to figure out what it is. I can’t say this is the case for all of the Tuxedo Cake ingredients, unfortunately.
Scoring
Taste: 10/10
Cost: 10/10
Convenience: 10/10
Nutrition: 1/10 (no cake is going to score well here, but I don’t like some of the ingredients!)
Overall
Must buy!
I can’t say enough good things about this cake! You have to try it. If you hate it, just send your leftovers to me and I’ll gladly finish it!

This is the best cake I have ever tasted. It beats all the cakes I have had at any restaurant, bakery, or other grocery store. My 7 year old grandson eats it right from the carton and does not like to share it. At first I thought it was too expensive, but after trying it, it is worth it! 😋
Could it have traces of hazelnuts in it. I am deathly allergic.
If just peanuts – it’s ok
Looks delicious!!
Mediterranean olive salad mix, Please! Distributor is Tasso ! Came in a 35.03 glass jar. UPC 5287813443 ive called Tasso. I have left notes at store to no avail. Would you help us?
Worth every penny! Decadent to say the least !
I have bought this cake many times and has always been great. Tonight my wife wantedit for her Chocolate craving. We were both very disappointed in the cake today. It tasted like they changed something in the cake. The white chocolate mousse tasted like vanilla not Chocolate and the mousse was not as flufy/creamy as it use to be. It cake will be going back to Costco.
Hello,
Is the cake apple fritter loaf cake vegetarian? Are the mono diglycerides in this cake used from plant based oils or animal fat?
interesting comments. my brother and his wife bought the tuxedo cake for my aunt on mothers day. the relatives loved it, and very little cake was left. it was a big hit. it was one of my most favourite cake. i have tried other costco cakes but not as good. i am sorry the chocolate cake that is praised that is no longer made, it is too bad. when this cake goes on sale i plan to buy it. i will freeze the cake in portions.
I’ve bought many cakes from Costco over the last 2 decades, and the only one that rivals the Tuxedo cake was the giant Chocolate fudge cake they used to sell over 8 years ago. That one was round with many layers of fluffy chocolate cake, chocolate mousse filling, and chocolate ganache glaze over all. At $14.95 it was a bargain, spectacular, and sorely missed.
The Tuxedo cake is my go to birthday cake, after I saw all the glowing reviews on Facebook, I decided to splurge (I’m diabetic, and this stuff is definitely off diet) and bought one. Now, before I go on, my brother is an Spectator award winning chef three times over, who has made me my birthday cakes for many years. So I know from a gourmet cake. This Tuxedo cake rivals any he has created.
All the layers are remarkable, but I am a stickler for the cake itself. The layer of chocolate cake has the perfect texture and crumble I want from a dessert cake, not too fluffy, not too light, with a rich, but not too strong chocolate flavor.
The only thing I would change are the brownie pieces scattered between the mousse and cream layers. They are texturally somewhat of an overkill, the cake doesn’t need chewy as much as it need a fruity zing. Brandied real cherries (not Maraschino) would take this over the top!
This is easily a $50 cake, at around $17, it’s a no brainer bargain buy. I save them for special occasions, I buy them for family Thanksgiving pot luck instead of the Costco pumpkin pie (mostly because I know someone else will bring it), which is another absolute winner, at $8 for a 10 1/2 inch deep dish wonder (have you tried the lattice topped apple pie?). They both deserve reviews.
If you want to stick to 280 calories, slicing a 16th of this cake would take some skills. Your estimate of 1/12th and 1/10th slice is doable. The calorie count of the slice you showed in your video is probably around 380-425 calories. Comparable to a 500 calorie Mocha Frappuccino from Starbucks. So not outrageously fattening, but not exactly diabetic friendly. Oh well!
It’s worth the risk.
Worth the risk 🤪🤪🤪 Loved that comment I fell on the floor I know what you mean 😭🤣
Hello,
Is this cake vegetarian? Are the mono diglycerides in this cake used from plant based oils or animal fat?
Hi Anis! I would contact Costco directly and ask as I’m not sure.
Is the toxido cake contains peanuts

Good question! I think I would contact Costco and ask.
I need to know if there is any alcohol in the Costco Tuxedo cake. I am a recovering alcoholic and don’t eat anything with alcohol in it. Thanks.
Hi Colleen, I don’t think so but I would contact Costco and confirm with them to be sure.
No baked cakes can contain alcohol, – it evaporates during the baking process
Hands down my favourite of all cakes-that-you-can- buy cake, that’s for sure. There are a cpl other chocolate cakes I have purchased in the past that are close to this, one from M&M meat store and another from Save-on-Foods.
@Scott W: your Creme Brûlée Cake sounds amazing…I’ll see what I can find out!
Great website – keep up the good work!

The nutrition label shows the calories for 1/16 of a cake. Does that mean that the cake contains 16 servings?
Costco thinks it should but I’d say more like ten to twelve decent sized pieces.
Hey, would you happen to know if it’s suitable for vegetarians?
Hey! I don’t see any gelatin in the ingredients.
I love chocolate and sweets.
I call this my diet cake.
Why?
I dislike it and won’t eat it.
Yuck.
Listen here Kyle. You got it all wrong. I bought this Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake and this is honest to god the best cake I’ve ever had since birth. I sat down with a single slice of this Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake, and I accidentally ended up eating the whole entire Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake. I don’t like to take the lords name in vain, but goddamn this Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake is the most heavenly cake ive tasted in my entire life. Rethink your life decisions Kyle. Think hard.
What you said lol. By far my favorite cake.!
True. We just had it at a gathering. I was sure as other food was catered in that this was a high-end bakery cake. Oh my. Heavenly.
For sure I didn’t eat the whole cake but about a quarter I have had at least 8 of these cakes over a two year period but had to stop do the caffeine in the chocolate 😞😞😞😞
C’mon, Meagan, tell us how you really feel!
Okay buddy every word of your review is wrong. “Yuck”??? Your “Diet cake”??? You’re the most childish person I’ve ever encountered in my 20 years of using the internet. You’re an imbecile! This Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake is the most delectable thing that has ever grazed across my 10,000 taste buds. Kyle I think you oughta change your name to IDIOT. People like you make me sick. You have a lot to learn buddy, a lot to learn.
Did you really need to post a rude ignorant comment like this! This cake tastes fantastic! I, don’t know what it is you were eating, but it certainly wasn’t this! Some people, narcissistic persons especially, just like to constantly whine and complain! This sounds like you? Plus, the vast majority of all of Natalie’s reviews, are spot on.
Hey Kyle! Go get your desperately needed attention somewhere else! What are you five years old? Seriously, immature attitude and it’s seriously ignorant thing to say! Please leave, and don’t come back and post any more ignorant comments! No one, and I do mean no one needs to hear anything from someone such as the likes of you! Your opinions, which, obviously stem from such an ignorant attitude, don’t matter to anyone here! Natalie, ignore moves like this they are not worth your attention, or anybody else’s for that matter! Just one more example of a person, in this world, that nobody needs, or wants to, hear from
I bought all the cakes at Costco and this is my favorite. As soon as I’m done eating the other cakes that I froze, I’ll buy this one again. I eat half fresh and freeze the other half for all Costco cakes.
Looking for who makes the Costco Kirkland Cakes.. They used to have a creme brulee cake that has since disappeared over a year ago and hasn’t returned.. Looking for who made it to see if it can be ordered. Thank you. My email is
La Rocca makes it.
Ive seen the person st the bakery take thr massive slab out of the LA Rocca box, cut it into rectangles, add the white chocolate stick and little balls (which they no longer do) and put it in the plastic box they serve it in.
At the top of the page, this entry is said to have been updated on Feb 24p What did you update?
This is a delicious cake that serves lots of people and priced really well. I bought it when visiting family in Montreal.
