Costco Kirkland Signature Gyro Kit Review

A gyro is Greek sandwich made with seasoned meat on pita topped with onion, tomatoes, cucumber, feta and tzatziki. The ingredients are simple but finding an amazing gyro at a grocery-store seems like a difficult feat. Costco carries a Kirkland Signature Gyro Kit with meat made from lamb and beef combined and all the accompaniments you need. I couldn’t resist picking up a kit to review make a quick meal during a family holiday.

Other Costco pre-made meals we’ve really enjoyed are the Kirkland Signature Quiche Lorraine, Kirkland Signature Meat Lasagna, Kirkland Signature Enchilada Bake, Kirkland Signature Quinoa Salad, Kirkland Signature Chicken Burger Meal Kit, Kirkland Signature Stuffed Salmon and the Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie.

Location in Store

We bought this in Kona, Hawaii and found it in the refrigerated pre-made meal section. The item number is 27230.

Taste

All four adults really enjoyed these gyro kit from Costco! It comes with meat, pita, feta cheese, lettuce, tzatziki sauce and a mixture of tomatoes and onions. The meat is a combination of beef and lamb.

Ready to cook!

I don’t like lamb very much so I was a bit worried I wouldn’t like the meat but I didn’t taste a lot of lamb flavor. If I didn’t look at the ingredients list, I wouldn’t know it’s lamb. Overall, I enjoyed the meat, it’s seasoned well but not too salty.

The pita bread is thick but still soft and flexible.

The pitas are nice and thick so they hold all the ingredients well but they’re also soft. Everyone loved the tzatziki sauce and couldn’t get enough of it. The lettuce was fresh and crisp and the tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions added some additional texture, flavors and freshness.

All of the ingredients go so well together!

The feta complements all the other flavors well and adds some additional saltiness and tang. When you combine everything in the kit together, you’re left with a delicious, filling pita.

Cost

The kit comes with enough ingredients to make six pitas and I paid $19.53 USD for it. This isn’t bad considering one kit fed four adults dinner, it’s much cheaper to buy this than go to any restaurants in Kona!

My tray weighed just over three pounds.

The cost is dependent on the weight of the tray and it costs $6.49 per pound. The heavier the tray, the more it will cost.

Convenience

This kit is really easy to whip and ready in just a few minutes. All that’s required is pre heating a skillet to medium high heat and cooking the meat until the meat reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also heat the pita bread in a pan for a few seconds or microwave it.

The feta is salty and slightly tangy. It’s very flavorful!

The kit needs to be kept refrigerated and the best before date is three days from when I purchased it. This would be awesome to bring camping or to have as quick and easy family dinner or lunch.

Nutrition

Calories

A 231-gram serving contains 530 calories, 33 grams of fat, 990 milligrams of sodium, 39 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fiber, four grams of sugar and 21 grams of protein. That’s quite a bit of sodium, fat and calories but I’m not surprised by this!

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty long which makes sense because you get a lot in the tray. I expected there to be a few unhealthy ingredients and there are. Canola oil, sugar, soybean oil. shortening, preservatives and carrageenan are the ingredients I don’t love to see!

The gyro kit ingredients contain wheat and milk and may contain soy, peanuts, egg, treenuts, fish, shellfish, crustaceans and sesame.
