Costco’s Christmas fruit cake is almost as good as the one grandma used to make!
Today I’m reviewing the Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake! This is a staple item at my parent’s house during the holiday season. I don’t know anyone who likes fruit cake as much as my dad does.
Other Christmas foods from Costco are the Kirkland Signature Pumpkin Pie, the Kirkland Signature Red Velvet Cheesecake, the Kirkland Signature Nanaimo Bars and the Kirkland Signature Ginger Cookies.
Location in Store
You can find the Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake in the bakery section at Costco. It’s not refrigerated. The item number is 13585.
Taste
I don’t love fruit cake but I actually don’t mind the Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake. It’s very moist and comes loaded with glazed fruit and nuts. You really don’t taste much of the actual cake because every bite is full of either fruit, nuts or both.
Out of all the store-bought fruit cakes my dad has had over the years he claims this one is the best he’s tried. It tastes mildly spiced and is a “medium” fruit cake, meaning it doesn’t have a ton of molasses.
It’s sweet due to the glazed fruits, currants and raisins but not sickeningly sweet. If you’re a fruit cake fan I think you’d probably enjoy the taste of this cake.
Cost
I paid $15.99 for the 1.6 kilogram Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake. The fruit cake is very dense and heavy! A tiny piece goes a long way.
Convenience
Buying a Christmas fruit cake is easier than making one from scratch. If you’d like to age your fruit cake you can pour your favorite liquor over top, wrap it in cheesecloth and put it in the fridge to marinade.
The cake freezes well and lasts well in the refrigerator as well. It’s also quite easy to slice. The fruit cake had a best before date of about three months from the date I purchased the cake.

Definitely not healthy at all, 1/12th of the cake is 530 calories, 19 grams of fat, 64 grams of sugar, 84 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, six grams of protein, 160 mg of sodium.
Ingredients
If you make your own fruit cake at home from scratch you know exactly what’s going into it. There are some ingredients in the Costco fruit cake that I don’t love like sulfites, palm oil and a bunch of chemical-sounding ingredients.
The Costco Christmas Fruit Cake contains sulfites, wheat, eggs, milk, pecans, walnuts and almonds. It may contain sesame, other tree nuts, soy and peanuts.

This is the ONLY product of Kirkland or of Costco which I found a complete waste of money. It’s loaded with healthy ingredients BUT it’s sickeningly sweet. Unwillingly I had no other option than to dispose it. Being a loyal customer, this is the first time I was disappointed with Costco.

I am hoping that costco brings back fruit cake this christmas. Its even better if you wrap it in a cheese cloth soaked in rum and leave in refrigerator for several weeks.

I was sent all over the store this year, last year and year before— looking for the fruitcake. It was the best fruitcake ever. Once again I am disappointed. The least they could do is publish the recipe!

I too am a fan of this fruitcake. Over the years I have tried many others, some good some tolerable and some not much. We usually get three of the Kirkland ones. One to eat, one to freeze and one to give. I have only had one fruitcake that was as good, that was from a friend who is no longer able. I would gladly buy them from Canada if that was the only way to get them.

On December 12th, I bought it at Costco Mississauga Ontario for $16.99. I would love to try it but will have to wait until Christmas. I don’t know this cake. I am an immigrant with a different Christmas tradition. Hoping for an unhealthy but tasty feast. 🙂

My mother made the best fruit cake when I was a kid, She used to add a little rum for flavor and made brandy hard sauce. I liked the hard sauce, but now at 80 I don’t need all the sugar. I have tried dozens of brands od fruit cakes and never found one i enjoyed like my mom’s. That is until I tried the Kirkland fruitcake. It was the best and only I would eat after finding it. I would buy two of them and keep them in the freezer. I would first slice then into small slices. Then take a slice now and then, that way it would last me until the nest Christmas. Unfortunately Costco has quit carrying them. It is all a product of so many bad fruitcakes gaining the reputation of being a joke that one was passed down for years. It is also like many items of food enjoyed by earlier generations and no longer popular with younger people. Maybe next year Costco can bring the down from Canada. or have them available online. It has been a very big disappointment to me. disappointment
I totally get it James, As a child my dad would always look forward to the fruitcake his mom made or my mom’s mom made. Now that they are gone my dad buys one of these every year and soaks it in rum. Although not the same as my grandma’s the Costco one does taste pretty good and brings back fond memories! I’m thinking of setting up a shipment option from Canada for next year so disappointed Costco fruitcake lovers can get one shipped from Canada since I’m at Costco so often, hopefully they still have them.
