Costco Kirkland Signature Beef & Pork Cabbage Rolls Review

Growing up, I looked forward to enjoying my Nanny’s homemade cabbage rolls at Christmas and I haven’t tasted any that are quite as delicious since she passed. When I spotted the Costco Kirkland Signature Beef & Pork Cabbage Rolls, I knew I wanted to give them a try despite the price. After reviewing countless Costco products over the years, it’s rare that something truly surprises me, but when I cut into these cabbage rolls, I was genuinely shocked. Keep reading to find out what makes them so unique!

Location in Store

The cabbage rolls are located in the pre-made meal section at Costco, near the Kirkland Signature Chicken Tacos, Kirkland Signature French Onion Meatball Bake and the Kirkland Signature Creole Style Jambalaya.

Taste

These Costco cabbage rolls aren’t like any cabbage rolls I’ve had in the past or am used to. My nanny used to make cabbage rolls every Christmas and they had mostly rice with a little meat but these Costco ones are all meat and barely any rice!

To me, these seem more like meatloaf wrapped in cabbage rather than a traditional cabbage roll. I’m used to cutting into a cabbage rolls and having the filling spill out but the meat in these just stays firm and there isn’t much rice noticeable.

I didn’t despise the flavor of the meat at all, I think it’s well seasoned and tasty but I didn’t love the pureed/processed texture the beef and pork has. The cabbage is fine, it’s not super soft/soggy and I personally like it a bit firmer!

The tomato-based sauce is thin, bland and has a slight hint of sweetness. I noticed there’s not a ton of sauce so if you like really saucy cabbage rolls you may be disappointed! I wasn’t thrilled with the cabbage rolls, however my parents really enjoyed them so obviously everyone has different tastes.

Cost

These are so expensive! I almost didn’t want to buy them to review because of the cost. However, I think Costco made the cabbage rolls so meaty to justify the cost and make them like a full meal rather than side.

The cost of the cabbage rolls is based on the weight of the particular tray you buy. They cost $15.99 Canadian per kilogram and my particular tray cost $26.96 Canadian. That’s for six large cabbage rolls in the tray.

Convenience

The cabbage rolls took forever to cook, way longer than the directions on the tray call for. When I check the cabbage rolls internal temperature at 35 minutes they were only at 70 degrees and needed to be at 165 degrees. I ended up cooking them for just under an hour.

The cabbage rolls need to be kept refrigerated and the best before date is four days from the day the rolls were packaged. These can be served with something as simple as a side salad or do what my parents did and serve them with pierogies and sausage.

Nutrition

Calories

One cabbage roll with sauce or a 251 gram serving contains 330 calories, 20 grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, eight grams of sugar, 17 grams of protein and 1060 milligrams of sodium. That’s so much sodium! I bet my dad had two of these with his dinner so that means he had more than 2000 milligrams of sodium just from his cabbage rolls!

Ingredients

There are some ingredients in the cabbage rolls that made me raise my eyebrows like soy sauce. whey protein concentrate and parmesan cheese. They could have made the cabbage rolls gluten-free by omitting the soy sauce, whey, parmesan and wheat crumbs.

This would have made the cabbage rolls more appealing to individuals with allergies/food sensitivities. The cabbage rolls contain milk, soy, wheat, and sulfites and may contain egg, fish, molluscs, crustaceans, tree nuts, peanut, sesame and mustard.

Overall

Walk on by!

The cabbage rolls from Costco definitely aren’t horrible, I actually didn’t mind the flavor and my parents loved them. I think they’re pretty expensive though and aren’t like the cabbage rolls I’ve had in the past.

  1. I thought the cabbage rolls were excellent! They are definitely meant to be the main meal, not a side dish. If I had to change anything, I would have liked a thicker, richer sauce….but a dollop of sour cream helps with creaminess, if you’re so inclined.
I would give the 4.5 of 5 stars.
    Will definitely buy them again!

  2. Natalie,

Thank you for your wonderful review. I agree the price is very high as high as the sodium content.

    Keep up your great work!
