I very rarely choose a veggie burger over a chicken/beef/salmon burger but I decided to pick up a box of the dr. Praegers Organic California Style Veggie Burgers from Costco to review them for the blog!

Taste

I am usually not a fan of “veggie burgers” so when I bought these I thought for sure there was no way I was going to like them but both my husband and I were pleasantly surprised at how much we enjoyed these! They taste kind of like a bunch of vegetables that are seasoned well, smushed together and formed into a patty! The California burgers pair well with all sorts of condiments. They’re seasoned well, they’re very flavorful and in my opinion are pretty tasty for a veggie burger!

Cost

The regular price for the California burgers is $14.99 Canadian however I got them for three dollars off so I paid $11.99 Canadian. There’s 12 burgers in the box.

Convenience

These are perfect to have around the house for those times when you have a guest over that doesn’t eat meat! They’re easy to grill or you could choose to bake them for pan fry them.

Nutrition

One burger is 190 calories, eight grams of fat, seven grams of protein, two grams of fibre, one gram of sugar, 350 mg of sodium and 21 grams of carbohydrates. I was actually pretty impressed by the ingredients list! Pretty much all ingredients I would expect to see. The burgers are gluten-free and vegan!

If you’re someone who doesn’t eat meat and wants a vegan, gluten-free option I would definitely check these dr.Praegers California Burgers out! I generally don’t like veggie burgers but actually brought one to work and enjoyed it!

  1. I love beef patties, but was looking for an alternative with less fat. I’ve never tried veggie patties before so I thought I’d give it at try… I didn’t expect it to taste anything like meat, but I did expect it to taste… like something… And no matter how I tried to cook it, it inevitably stays mushy and falls apart as soon as you try to transfer onto the burger. I will eat almost anything, but this just aint it. Waste of money. Scared me off from veggie burgers for a while.

  2. I was so hopeful as I was recently diagnosed with fatty liver disease. Trying desperately to eat way less meat. I really like the Boca burgers REALLY but they only come in a 4 pack. I bought these at Costco. Mushy, very little flavor and fall apart, I keep finding small hard pieces of what’s hoping is bean stems. So unfortunately I will never buy them again. I have Ried all the ways to prepare them and still a flavorless mushy mess.

  3. I have bought these burgers for over a year and enjoy them baked in the oven. Today however I found a piece of hard white plastic, 1/4” x 1/4”, in my burger after biting into it. Now definitely turned off these burgers.

  4. Worst vegi burgers ever. I imagine the invention happened after someone smushed steamed peas and carrots for their newborn child. Then they ever so lightly compressed them (not really) together into a patty. They fall apart constantly, with any attempt to lift out or flip. It is like trying to re-cook oatmeal. An aweful experience, no matter what cooking method you try (fry, air fry, bake, whatever).

The only draw to this ‘burger’ is the very unprocessed vegetables (raw-like peas and carrots mostly). Perhaps this works for an extreme vegan, but to anyone who’s ever had any kind of ‘burger’ in the past, this becomes a mushed mess using any cooking means.

I keep getting disappointed every time a try another one from the box.

    • I completely and we wholeheartedly agree. There are many great veggie burgers available but these certainly are NOT them. They have no internal consistency and therefore fall apart easily, no matter if they’re cooked in a toaster oven, fried on a pan, grilled or oven-baked. Even if they somehow stay together enough to move onto a plate or sandwich, the internals of the burger are wet (akin to British “mushy peas” but even mushier), so there’s no way to really chew on them. I can’t recommend these overpriced “baby food patties” at all.

      • Totally agree until I tried them in my new air-fryer. Have eaten it three lunches in a row…keto wrap on bottom, spinach, frozen pattie, small strip of havarti cheese, sliced pepper. In air-fryer for 10 minutes, take out, cut in half and put on half on top of other to make a sandwich…most amazing lunch I’ve had in a long time..I’m addicted. And it’s sitting on the toasted wrap so it doesn’t fall apart..yum

  5. They stay together well in the oven [air fryer] which is the recommended method on the package, and even though the nutritional info says that one patty has 15% sodium in fact it tastes quite salty. Flavour is so so. I would not buy these again — even on sale at the Costco warehouse they were an unfortunate purchase.

    • This is a major problem for most types of veggie burgers and is why many opt to use methylcellulose as an ingredient. Methylcellulose firms up when heated and softens again when cooled. You’ll find this ingredient in Beyond Burgers.

    • I think so! Soy itself is gluten-free and “soy” may refer to soybeans or the protein from soybeans instead of soy sauce that has gluten.

    • Big let down for me. Nice flavors but pure mush in the middle. And don’t be fooled by the thick patty on the box – they a quarter of an inch thick at best. Will not purchase again.
