I’ve never encountered poke served in a pastry shell before, so when I spotted the Dom Reserve Salmon Poke Bites at Costco, I was curious. I’ve enjoyed other Dom Reserve Poke products in the past, so I figured I’d give these a shot. Is the combination of salmon poke and phyllo pastry a delightful pairing, or does it turn out to be an odd flavor mismatch?
Location in Store
These can be found in the freezer aisle at Costco, near the Dom Reserve Singles Steelhead Salmon Poke and the tuna poke. The item number is 2467708.
Taste
First off, I want to point out that there was more salmon poke to fill the phyllo pastry shells than I needed. I was a bit worried there wouldn’t be enough.
The phyllo pastry shell is very light, buttery and has a lot of layers. The pastry is crispy but not crunchy and kind of melts in your mouth. There isn’t a lot of flavor in the pastry so the flavor of the poke really stands out. I wish there was a bit less pastry or the shells were a bit bigger so I could use up all my salmon.
The poke has a nice sesame, soy flavor. There’s a slight amount of fishiness but it’s still really tasty. The salmon has a bit of sweetness to it which pairs well with the soy. I appreciate that the quality of the poke seems very good. I think I’d rather just have the filling on its own.
Cost
I paid $14.99 Canadian for the 350-gram box which includes a 300-gram bag of salmon poke and 15 phyllo shells. I think that’s pretty reasonable considering it’s a fancy looking salmon appetizer that a lot of people will enjoy.
Convenience
The salmon poke bites are quite easy to prepare, at first I thought I’d have to bake the shells but they’re fully baked. All that needs to be done is the salmon needs to be defrosted and spooned into the shells that have been sitting at room temperature for about 15 minutes.
To defrost the poke you can go put it in the refrigerator overnight or run it under cold water. I placed my poke in a big bowl of cold water and it was thawed in about ten minutes. The box recommends eating the poke in two days and I wouldn’t let it sit at room temperature too long.
I wondered if the poke would be difficult to place into the pastry shells but it was quite simple. The best before date is about a year from when I purchased it and it needs to be kept in the refrigerator.

A 50-gram serving or two bites contains 120 calories, six grams of fat, seven grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of fibre, two grams of sugar, nine grams of protein and 200 milligrams of sodium! That’s quite a bit of protein for 120 calories and not a ton of fat or carbohydrates.
Ingredients
The ingredients list for the salmon is pretty straight forward with everything you’d expect to see based on the taste of the poke. Such as soy sauce, vinegar, chili pepper, sesame oil and lime. The phyllo pastry shells actually don’t contain any butter, just oil so if you’re someone following a dairy-free diet you’re in luck!

Overall
Give it a try!
I think the combination of poke and phyllo pastry is a bit odd but I think these are a unique appetizer for a party and the salmon poke is quite good!
