Costco Smucker’s Uncrustables Review

A good peanut butter and jam sandwich requires fresh soft bread filled the perfect ratio of peanut butter and jam. Smucker’s Uncrustables seem like the most convenient grab and go item for busy families but a frozen peanut butter and jam sandwich leaves me feeling skeptical. It’s not hard to slap together two pieces of bread spread with peanut butter and jam so these Uncrustables from Costco better taste pretty good to be worth the cost.

Costco carries a lot of different kid-friendly foods like the Clif Kid ZBars, Meiji Hello Panda Cookies, Kirkland Signature Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies, Kirkland Signature Jelly Belly Gourmet Jelly Beans, That’s It Mini Fruit Bars, Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars, Gogo Squeez, Kirkland Signature Fruit and Vegetable Pouches and the Kirkland Signature Organic Juice Boxes.

Location in Store

These are located in the freezer section at Costco and the item number is 2121272.

Taste

My first impression when I tried my Uncrustable was that it tastes pretty similar to a homemade peanut butter and jam sandwich. The bread is plain but soft and fluffy and the peanut butter and jam are well-balanced and taste normal. Kids will probably enjoy the neat circular shape, and let’s be honest – nobody will miss the crust.

I tried the peanut butter and strawberry spread version and found the strawberry jam pretty enjoyable. It’s has a nice flavor and the right amount of sweetness. I’ve always liked Smucker’s jam, for what that’s worth. I don’t think the jam has any seeds or chunks of fruit in it.

Cost

The box comes with 18 individually wrapped Uncrustables and costs $16.99 Canadian. Obviously it’s way cheaper to buy bread, jam and peanut butter and make your own sandwiches so you’re paying for the convenience and packaging.

Convenience

The Uncrustables need to be kept frozen and the best before date is five months from when I purchased them. They take about 45 minutes to thaw completely before you’re able to eat them.

Each sandwich is individually wrapped so they’re perfect to pack in a lunch box for school (if the school allows peanut butter). They’re also handy to have at home for a quick snack or meal on the go. I also find that because of the way they’re constructed they’re not very messy!

Nutrition

Calories

One sandwich contains 210 calories, nine grams of fat, 28 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, 10 grams of sugar, six grams of protein and 220 milligrams of sodium. The amount of calories, fat, carbohydrates, sugar and protein seem pretty reasonable and what I’d expect to see.

Kids will mostly be drawn to these and I don’t think they have too much sugar, fat, calories or carbohydrates for a kid to enjoy at lunch or even as a snack!

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty standard with bread, peanut butter and strawberry spread being the three main ingredients. However, the sandwiches aren’t using 100% whole grain, whole wheat bread, natural peanut butter or low sugar strawberry jam.

The Uncrustables contain barley, peanuts and wheat but are dairy-free and soy-free.

Overall

Give them a try!

They’re pretty good for what they are, I mean they’re just bread, jam and peanut butter but they’re still pretty tasty!
