I do all the grocery shopping mostly by myself, except when I go to Costco Sean usually will come with me. I think because I’ve been doing all the shopping he’s forgotten how to check the price of things and often I’ll find him throwing things in our cart and when I ask him how much a particular item costs, he has no idea. A few years ago Sean and I had these bison sausages from Costco that we loved to eat as hot dogs. They disappeared from Costco and we continuously would check to see if they were brought back. I’m pretty sure these are a different brand but we had to try these Prairie Creek Kitchen Bison Smoked Sausages.
Taste
The first thing I thought when I tasted these is that they taste pretty similar to an all-beef regular delicious sausage. I was slightly worried that they would taste a bit gamy but they don’t. If you blindfolded me and told me I had to determine which was the bison and which was the beef sausage I wouldn’t be able to pick up on a difference. I will say that these are very seasoned which means they are salty. You can taste strong flavors of rosemary, garlic and salt and also a hint of smokiness. I appreciated the seasoning and flavors chosen because they make these sausages very versatile. We ate them two separate nights, one night with pierogies and one night as hot dogs. Quite frankly, these were a little too salty for my liking. They left my mouth feeling scorched from salt after I had finished eating them. I think with a tad less salt these would be quite a bit tastier. Do they taste any different than a higher quality beef sausage? Not that I could tell.
Cost
I couldn’t for the life of me figure out WHY our total was so much until I looked at the bill after. Sean had thrown these bison sausages in the cart and I didn’t even think to ask about the price. I do the grocery shopping mostly by myself (except for when we go to Costco). I think because I’ve been doing all the shopping Sean has forgotten how to check the price of things – I often find him throwing things in our cart and when I ask him how much a particular item costs, he has no idea. Well, long story short, these are not cheap. $19.99 Canadian for the pack of eight sausages. That’s about $2.50 per sausage. I understand that bison is more expensive but this just seemed a little high for eight sausages.
Convenience
These are fully cooked but I recommend heating them/cooking them prior to eating. The pack isn’t resealable so once opened if you’re not using them all you have to find some way to keep them fresh. I usually just will put them in a ziplock bag and freeze them and find that works well. There are many ways you can use the bison sausage – with pierogies, as a hot dog or as your main meat dish with a salad or rice, to list a few.
Nutrition
These are low in calories and carbohydrates and high in fat and sodium. The amount of protein isn’t quite as high as I thought it would be. One sausage is 220 calories, 18 grams of fat, 500mg of sodium and 13 grams of protein. I think this might be a good option for those who are following the Keto diet. One thing I’ll say about these Prairie Creek Kitchen Smoked Bison Sausages from Costco is that the ingredients list is very straight forward and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of additives or chemicals. Nutritionally I much prefer the Freybe Smoked Turkey & Chicken Sausage from Costco.
My husband and I agreed that for the cost, we won’t purchase these again. They weren’t at all special. We enjoyed them, but can’t justify the extra cost!
