Broccoli became a big part of my life when I married my husband. Sean eats broccoli with his lunch every single work day and has been doing so for the last 14 or so years! When I first started dating Sean I remember him telling me about eating broccoli and chicken for lunch every day at work and I thought he was super weird. Now I’m the one that makes his broccoli and chicken for lunch. I usually buy a bag of fresh broccoli from Costco, but when we went to Costco on Friday they didn’t have any, so instead of stopping at another grocery store I convinced Sean to try the Nature’s Touch Frozen Broccoli Florets!

Taste

This broccoli has no added seasoning or spices, it’s just straight-up broccoli and tastes like broccoli. The broccoli is high-quality and tastes nice and fresh, but you can tell from the texture and taste that it’s been frozen. This broccoli isn’t super firm like steamed fresh broccoli tends to be. When cooked, the frozen broccoli stems stay firm, but the head of the broccoli does get a little soggy and mushy and starts to fall apart a little. Overall, it tastes fine but definitely isn’t a substitute if you love the crispness of fresh broccoli.

Cost

The large bag comes with four separate 500g bags of frozen broccoli inside. The cost is $9.99 Canadian not on sale. The price of fresh broccoli is always fluctuating, I usually find it ranges from about $1.49 per lb to $2.99 per lb. This frozen broccoli at times will be cheaper than fresh and at other times may be more expensive than fresh. You’re also paying for packaging and convenience with this frozen broccoli product. I think the price is reasonable for the amount of broccoli in the bag.

Convenience

You don’t have to do anything to the bag of broccoli other than popping it in the microwave and heating it for five to six minutes. The bag definitely gets some water in the bottom when you cook it so I don’t recommend pouring the bag directly onto your plate. I tried different cooking times to see if I could prevent the mush/soggy factor and keep the broccoli crisp but I found no matter how long it was cooked, the broccoli still ends up slightly mushy. This broccoli is super convenient as a side or used in a stir fry or casserole!

Nutrition

I love that there aren’t any added seasonings or oils. This is just plain quick frozen broccoli that’s very healthy for you! Half a cup is 25 calories, zero grams of fat, one gram of sugar and two grams of protein. If you google it, you can find a million reasons why broccoli is great for you!

I’m definitely going to be using this broccoli to make a stir fry and maybe even have it with some pasta. If you’re someone who regularly enjoys fresh, crisp broccoli you may find you don’t enjoy the texture of this frozen broccoli as much.

  1. Hello, I give this to my toddler that loves broccoli. I have bought organic broccoli and it was full of bugs. I have read that frozen broccoli has a lot of bug/ Since this is pesticide free but it is frozen, I cannot soak in water before or detect the bugs. I wonder if there is bugs in the florets that I cannto detect.

  2. I recently tried out the frozen organic broccoli from Costco’s big bag of it. I didn’t mind the soggy aspect (from frozen); but I am seriously wondering about the color, which is an intense green, all the way through the stalks and flowers – a green that looks very very fakey and artificial. What gives it this color? It makes me doubt the “organic” label, on this and on other Costco products. Help?

    • I wonder the same about the color. The water in the pot after steaming it had a slightly bluish green look with fine pieces of broccoli still intensely bright green. It did not look natural.

  3. I wonder why this frozen broccoli always stays super firm and green even after cooking in the steamer? Do we know where that broccoli comes from? Thank you.
