Chips aren’t something we eat a ton of in our house but when we do decide to dive into them we usually have no problem eating a whole bunch in one sitting. Chips are addictive like that aren’t they? My favorite kind of chips are usually salt and vinegar, how about you? Did you know that Ketchup chips and All Dressed chips are a Canadian thing? Okay, enough random chip talk.

Taste

I love sweet potatoes so when I saw the Costco Kirkland Signature Sweet Potato chips I had to try them. Usually if we go out for a burger I will pick sweet potato fries over regular fries if they’re available. So how do these taste? They’re pretty good! They’re definitely addictive. Crunchier and slightly thicker than your average regular potato chip. They have that kettle/baked chip kind of thickness. They’re seasoned with sea salt and I didn’t find them too salty. They definitely aren’t overly flavorful so if you buy these expecting they’ll be loaded with a ton of flavor you might be disappointed. This means that they make an awesome chip to go with some dip. Have you ever had those Terra vegetable chips that come in the black bag? These kind of taste like those.

Cost

These aren’t super cheap but they’re also not really overpriced. I paid $7.99 Canadian for this big bag. It’s a similar price to the other chips available at Costco and the bag is quite large. Also the bag states that they’re organic, anytime you see the word organic just expect to pay a little more. Unless you get really lucky and find the organic cheaper than the non-organic. This happened to me once with blueberries, the organic blueberries were cheaper than the non-organic. That was a pleasant surprise.

Convenience

Chips are super convenient! What would make these even more convenient though is if the bag was re-sealable. There’s no way we would finish this amount of chips in a short time period so I always worry about storing them properly so they don’t become stale. A big bag of chips like this also isn’t the most convenient for those who live alone or just are the only ones in the house who eat chips.

Nutrition

Nutritionally, these aren’t much better for you than plain old potato chips. Don’t let the sweet potato fool you. If you eat 25 chips you’re looking at 260 calories, 16 grams of fat, 125 mg of sodium, eight grams of sugar, four grams of fibre and two grams of protein. Comparing to 31 Miss Vickie’s Plain Chips you’re looking at 270 calories, 16 grams of fat, 210 mg of sodium, 0 grams of sugar, two grams of fibre and four grams of protein. Both these chips have pretty much the same ingredients, it’s more a matter of taste preference (sweet potato or regular) and if organic is important to you.

I’m glad we tried these chips and have no problems with the idea of finishing them up. If we had a larger family or ate chips regularly I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase these again but for the two of us this is just a little too big of a bag and the cost is a little high. The taste wasn’t mind blowing or exactly unique and I was looking for extra flavor but overall they’re enjoyable and go great with dip.

Taste: 8/10 (no complaints but not exactly mind blowing or very unique)

Cost: 6.5/10

Convenience: 8.5/10 (wish the bag was smaller and resealable)

Nutrition: 2/10

  1. I have loved the Kirkland Sweet Potato chips and can eat it on the low glycemic index diet in much moderation. Then it went away. Then came Jacksons Sweet Potato Chips at Costco and then they went away. Does any one know what is happening? SPC sell quickly and are slow to be replaced. Glycemic Index Sweet potatoes is 61 and Yams are 46 and regular potatoes are 78-87. Frying any type of regular or sweet potato increases the glycemic index. The higher numbers are much closer to sugar which is 100 and lower numbers are much closer to water which GCI of zero. Curiously High Fructose Corn sugar is 102. Many Seniors need Sweet potatoes and better yet yams. Costco is letting us down.

  2. I, like Betsy, have been disappointed by the fact that Costco can’t seem to keep a steady supply of the “Kirkland” Sweet Potato Chips. Buying them at Costco IS a definite draw, but often I have been told by my local store(s) that “they are out of stock and not shown to be returning.” Of course, when they DO return (despite the store’s assurance that they would not), I try to stock up.
Incidentally, they are available sometimes at Amazon (and a few other non-Costco sites), but at exorbitanly inflated prices.

  3. These chips are one of the reasons I bought a Costco membership. They are just excellent, and sweet potato chips are not as easy to find as white potato chips. However, shortly after I bought my membership, my local store stopped carrying these. Considering they’re Kirkland brand and no other store carries Kirkland brand, I’m rather confused as to why I can’t find them anymore. So disappointing!!!!

  4. I tried this Kirkland Sweet Potato Chips and I loved it really. But would loved it more if they would lessen the salt and if Kirkland could make another one but seasoned with a bit of sugar to have a sweet taste just as it name says sweet potato chips. Looking forward that this request will be granted.
