Today we’re talking Costco Kirkland Signature Creamy Almond Butter, which is a product I’ve often wanted to try but just never have. I’m a huge nut butter fan and I love almonds, so I figured I should probably try this almond butter.

Taste

The Costco Kirkland Signature Almond Butter tastes exactly like the ingredients listed, roasted almonds. It has a distinct roasted almond flavor so there’s no mistaking this for standard peanut butter, the roasted almond flavor is slightly more complex than just plain peanut butter. The ingredient list consists of one single ingredient: roasted almonds. There isn’t any added preservatives, sugar or oil. If you’re searching for a sweet almond butter, look elsewhere because the almond butter doesn’t have any added sugar so it’s not at all sweet. It also has a slightly gritty texture from the almonds, although it’s not a chunky peanut butter, it’s smooth with the added grittiness. It pairs well with jam, honey and bananas just like a peanut butter would. If you like eating roasted almonds you’ll enjoy the taste of this.

Cost

The almond butter was purchased for $9.99 Canadian 765 gram jar. I have found that almond butter generally is slightly more expensive than peanut butter. Especially when it’s natural and not loaded with a bunch of fillers. You can definitely find cheaper nut butter so if you’re really watching your money this may seem expensive. When you consider how many almonds it would take to make one large jar of almond butter I feel like the price at Costco is set reasonably.

Convenience

Super convenient to have around home. You can use it for toast, on top of oatmeal, in smoothies, on a banana or just eat it with a spoon. The Costco Kirkland Signature Almond Butter needs to be refrigerated after opening. Also I’ll point out that when you first open it there’s a pool of oil sitting on top that needs to be mixed into the rest of the nut butter. Mixing it requires a little elbow grease so this product is a little less convenient than for example a jar of Kraft peanut butter.

Nutrition

Two tablespoons of Costco Kirkland Signature Almond Butter is 210 calories, 18 grams of fat, eight grams of protein, one gram of sugar and three grams of fibre. Although it’s high in calories and fat this is considered to be healthy fat. You probably only need about one tablespoon so if you use only one tablespoon you cut the nutrition information in half. Obviously, if you eat half a jar in one sitting you may be looking at a lot of fat and calories, but overall this is a healthy food product. I noticed that the almond butter is definitely thinner than other nut butters I’ve had so it’s easy to use more than a tablespoon to cover a piece of toast. Also, I can’t imagine myself sitting with this jar in front of the TV and eating copious amounts of it, it’s just not that kind of thing.

Overall this is a good staple product that tastes of high quality roasted almonds. It’s simple but that’s the way it should be. Whether you choose almond butter or peanut butter, they’re both good for you and are quite similar nutrition-wise. I have to admit, I think I prefer the taste of less healthy versions of nut butter that don’t have the oil on top and are thick and creamy.

  4. I have to disagree with you on the sweetness. If you are used to eating a ton of sugar then I can see why you may not think it has any sweetness. I also think taste is subjective to eat taster 😉
I do agree it is thinner than most nut butters and does arrive with the almond oil settled on top.
But I disagree, I absolutely love eating this all by itself from the jar with a fork after sprinkling a bit of sea salt on the top later…YUM

  5. When I get my Kirkland almond butter home, I store it in the pantry, I put it UPside down. Later when I’m ready to eat it, I turn it right side up. Then I can stir it. The oil is on the bottom so I can just stir the oil in without spilling and my almond butter is ready to spread on rice cakes or bagels or toast or to be dipped into by apple slices or celery. It’s a great breakfast or snack.

      • We have never refrigerated peanut or almond butter after opening … despite the instructions. Always keep it in the pantry, because cold nut butter on warm toast isn’t so nice. Have never seen the nut butters kept in the pantry spoil or made anyone ill.

    • I never store mine in the refrigerator after opening and have never had an issue with it going rancid. But then I can go through a jar within 2 weeks! Love, Love, Love!

  6. My Mother in law taught us to mix natural butters like Almond by using only one beater in your hand mixer. Works like a charm. You never have to keep mixing it!!
