Costco Del Destino Mango Slices Review

Are these canned peaches or mango slices? Convenient, but are they worth it?

Do you love mangoes but despise cutting them? Do you ever find it difficult to find perfectly ripe mangoes? Today I’m reviewing these Costco Del Destino Mango Slices that can be found at Costco in the section with other jarred vegetables usually near the sauces as well.

Taste

These taste like delicious, soft, sweet, ripe canned peaches! Not quite close to fresh mango. They’re conveniently sliced and jarred! I recommend placing the jar In the fridge before consuming but I usually like to eat my fruit cold. When I was picking a jar I noticed that there was different ripeness levels to choose from. Usually, you can tell by looking at the firmness of the mango and the color. The lighter, firmer mangoes are generally less sweet and crisper. The darker colored, softer appearing mangoes are usually quite soft (sometimes even mushy) and are very sweet. However, I found these tasted more like canned peaches than mango so if you like canned peaches you might like these.

Cost

The 1.19 liter jar of mangoes cost $10.99 Canadian (regular price) – definitely not cheap. You can buy an entire case of about nine mangoes for less than that. However, you’re paying for the convenience of having ripe, already sliced mangoes. When I’ve purchased fresh sliced mangoes before, those were also quite expensive. Mango is also generally not one of the cheaper fruits to buy, at least not where I live.

Convenience

As I mentioned! You’re getting sliced mangoes that are ready to consume. The jar indicates that the mangoes should be consumed within 15 days of the jar being opened and also indicates that the mangoes should be kept in the fridge once opened.

Nutrition

The ingredients list is super short but it does contain sugar as an ingredient. A half-cup of mango is 90 calories, zero grams of fat and nineteen grams of sugar. Definitely high in sugar but that’s mostly natural sugar. Whenever I have jarred or canned fruit that’s packed in any kind of juice or has added sugar I simply rinse the fruit to remove a bit of excess sugar.

These are way more convenient than dealing with cutting your own mangos. However, I probably won’t purchase them again due to the cost and added ingredient of sugar as well as the fact they don’t really taste like fresh mango!

Taste: 9.5/10

Cost: 4/10

Convenience: 10/10

  1. Since 2018, every morning in my house has started with Del Destino sliced mangos. The only problem is that Costco stocks products at its convenience. When these are available, I stock up on 40 cases. Del Destino has been consistent over the years, so if once in a while a slice is less then best, I toss it and eat the rest! I am looking for some now. Will someone please let me know where you spot any?

  2. I brought these only recently and they looked great in the jar. However that where all resemblance to mangoes cease, they dont have a taste and have a thick floury consistency. These should be taken off all Costco shelves absolutely dreadful.

Waste of money and very Disappointed.

  3. I know mangoes like the back of my hand. When I look for ripe mangoes I feel them, look at the color and ripeness and buy them. One thing I know from eating fresh mangoes off our trees in our youth, there is some nectar where it attaches to the branch. You’ll see it sometimes when buying fresh ones. The other trick I use after getting them is a clean toothpick immersed partway along the seed/pith. When you leave it in a bit of seepage is noticeable, lol! Also when you withdraw it it’ll seep out and you can roll the toothpick along your tongue and taste the flovarful sweetness. Alphonso mangoes are the best on the world’s best list. They are native to India among other hundreds. India accounts for almost half of mango exports. Get these at Sams Club and they’re fine quality.
The fruit come in a thousand different varieties. Ones with a lot of fibrous flesh are better for juicing particularly because they’re harder to eat since the strains get stuck in dentition. All mangoes are great for juicing. Even the greener and or bittersweet ones. Cheers!

  4. I’ve been trying for over a year to get these ; I absolutely love them – my favourite favourite preserved fruit; everyone who tastes wants to know where I got them because they are Ultra delicious . So pay any attention to the negative reviews it’s absolutely ridiculous I keep asking people where I can get them can’t go because we live in Canada. I wish they’d store the shelves of them again so so good!

  5. I just threw away an entire big jar of these after tasting only one. They are absolutely awful. They taste more like potatoes than like mangoes. They look so beautiful and the jar looks so regal, but they are a huge disappointment. If you want something that tastes like mangoes though and you cannot get a hold of fresh ones then try soaking dried mangoes in water. Also the frozen mango chunks at Costco are pretty good too. Nothing compares to the Ataulfo fresh mangoes from Costco. Those are really excellent if you let them ripen until they are soft. The larger fresh mangoes that Costco sells are not quite as good as those little guys

  7. Hi, thanks for this. Wondering if you ever did try another jar in case others do taste more mango-y. I was also thinking that in terms of eating them in 15 days, I could freeze the rest in one or 2 packs as I will cook with them as I move to a plant based diet. Which means I should probably switch to the frozen ones but I find those often have lots of under ripe fruit in them. I dislike the added sugar too. Will also rinse.
