If you’re looking for a veggie burger from Costco for your summer barbecue needs, one option is the Yves Ultimate Veggie Burger. These veggie burgers are plant-based and gluten-free. How do they taste to a beef burger eater and are they as good as other vegetarian burgers from Costco?
I enjoy beef burgers, that’s for sure but years ago when I started this blog I decided it was important to try lots of vegetarian and vegan items to review. Over the years I’ve had my fair share of plant-based products from Costco. The Costco Yves Ultimate Veggie Burgers are something I’ve seen in the store for quite some time but never tried until now.
Other plant-based items from Costco are the Beyond Meat Beyond Sausage, MadeGood Star Puffed Crackers, Azuma Seaweed Salad, Don Lee Farms Organic Veggie Bites, Kirkland Signature Organic Oat Beverage, Wholly Veggie Buffalo Cauliflower and the Leanfit Organic Plant Based Protein Powder.
Location in Store
You can find the veggie burgers in the refrigerated deli section, near all the cheese and sausage. The item number is 1136949.
Taste
The first thing I notice tasting these veggie burgers is how moist they are. I find veggie burgers can be kind of dry tasting but even after barbecuing these were moister than other veggie burgers I’ve tried.
I can’t say I love the flavor, I find there’s a displeasing aftertaste. The aftertaste reminds me of cardboard mixed with mushrooms. The mushroom flavor is weird because there are no mushrooms on the ingredients list. I like veggie burgers that taste like vegetables compressed into a patty. These taste more similar to meat but not in a good way. They kind of have almost a gamey, unappetizing meat flavor.
Both my husband and I tried these and he thought they were better than I did and felt they’re one of the best veggie burgers he’s tried. I will say that when you put them in a bun with ketchup, mustard, tomato and relish they taste way better compared to trying the patty alone, almost like a regular burger.
Cost
There are 12 veggie burgers in the box and the cost is $12.99 Canadian, which isn’t bad for a plant-based product. It’s just over a dollar per patty.
Convenience
There are a few different preparation methods listed on the box. Stovetop, barbecue and microwave. We barbecued the burger but I think you could also easily cook these in an air fryer. They’re already fully cooked so you don’t need to worry about them being underdone.
I think having a box of veggie burgers in the freezer is a good idea during the summer months. Therefore, if you have a guest over who’s vegan or vegetarian you have something to offer them.
The burgers come packaged in pairs and need to be kept refrigerated.
Nutrition
Calories
One veggie patty is 160 calories, eight grams of fat, seven grams of carbohydrates, four grams of fibre, one gram of sugar, 16 grams of protein and 440 mg of sodium. I like that there’s a good amount of protein and the calories and carbohydrates aren’t super high.
Ingredients
I prefer when veggie burgers are made from vegetables and lentils like onions, chickpeas, broccoli, carrots, peppers, etc. The main ingredient in the Costco Yves Ultimate Veggie Burgers is soy If you have a soy allergy, be aware these are mostly soy! They are gluten-free though, so that’s one positive!
Scoring
Taste: I give them a 6/10 as a veggie burger. My husband gives them an 8/10
Cost: 9/10
Convenience: 9/10
Nutrition: 6/10
Overall
Walk on by/Give it a try!
I personally prefer the Costco dr. Praegers Organic California Veggie Burgers but my husband liked these. If you’re someone who likes veggie burgers or are vegan/vegetarian I think they’re worth trying to decide whether you like them. If you’re someone just trying to cut out beef burgers I think there’s other options from Costco I’d recommend instead like the Connie’s Kitchen Chicken Burgers or Trident Salmon Burgers.
Have you tried these? What do you think of them?

If you’re going to review a processed vegan food, then perhaps another vegan reviewer should be the one tasting and judging. I’ve been vegan for 9 years and my taste buds have changed dramatically. Meat seems as edible as a shoe to me now. Cheese, a food I was once addicted to, seems disgustingly greasy and gross. Conversely plant based foods containing soy may seem strange to a meat eater who’s accustomed to a lot grease and fat in their food. I’ve had these burgers and they are just as good as any hamburger I had when I ate meat. Only better because they are better for you, hands down.
Just tried Yves Burgers (Costco) for the first time. Bland & a little slimy. Marinated the next one in Worchester sauce & pepper overnight. Great!! Next batch of 2 marinade with Shawarma spices – WOW!! I think one can be quite creative with these burgers rather than piling on the mustard, ketchup & mayo. But best of all — ground a few in my meat chopper with Indian spices – made meat balls for Korma curry. Added left over veggies, Hungarian paprika, onion powder, one egg – voila!! meatloaf. Fried onions & fresh sliced tomatoes add a delightful touch.
Hi l have been eating these burgers for few years l give 9 out of 10 love it and other products from yves
Does anyone know where/if you can get this burger (preferably this size too) in Toronto? I had this in the summer and they were so good. I prefer them over almost all the other brands I’ve tried.
Ive been searching for like 3 months and cant find these π Please save meeee π
you can usually get them in Food Basics and other places in their veggie section, but they’re a little smaller than the ultimate burgers that costco has. They still taste great though. Comes in four packs, and as i said, a little smaller. It’s frustrating that our local costco only has these in occasionally.
Thanks. Sorry for the slow reply. Hopefully Costco brings them I’m during the summer as it’s the best taste to price ratio I’ve found for non meat burgers π
Yves has had a few different versions of these burgers over the last 25 years. Last I tried these I found them quite decent though nothing I would call amazing. They’re a good salty-meaty addition to a meal if that’s what you’re craving as well as a good protein boost. You can add a few drops of soy sauce (or tamari) on a side for extra flavor – but don’t fry it on that side or the soy will burn … if anything flip it on that side but remove from pan after 2 seconds.
They’re definitely low-fat for a burger so cooking technique is important. Don’t try to fry the heck out of them but rather re-heat, covered on low heat and only 90 sec per side maximum. I sometimes even add a teaspoon or so of water to keep them moist.
As the author mentioned, if you prefer true vegetable-based patties, the Dr. Praegers are a good option.
Good bang for the buck at $1 per patty compared to other brands.
We bought these recently. Did Yves change their recipe? They were barely palatable and not palatable without a lot of sauce. We don’t like the other kind of vegetable patty where you taste bits and pieces of vegetables. I’d rather eat a salad or have vegetables on the side, not in my meat substitute.
For what it’s worth, we don’t Beyond meat burgers either.
While I appreciate the reviews, even though I don’t always agree with you, I find it rather insulting when you tell others to “Walk on by/Give it a try”. It’s like reminding us of the obvious. Whatever we want to do in terms of shopping (or anything in life), we’ll do it. We don’t need convincing , nudging one way or another, especially since you’re not a fan of these.
Lol. Wow. What’s obvious is that someone doesn’t know how reviews work. She did a fine job reviewing/detailing her reasons. The walk on by/give it a try thing is just her schtik/saying it’s like branding. “Even though I don’t always agree with you” ??? Not a single person always agrees with a particular reviewer, soooo
@canmore, insulting? What a weird comment to make. Ummmm, you’re reading a review. She’s literally offering a suggestion based on her personal opinion of a product. That’s how these things work.
You must be really fun at parties.
In other news… I really like these burgers! I like the textured bits mentioned in the review. I also really enjoy that tangy game-y taste. I think they did a really good job! My husband and I are vegan and keto so it’s hard to find yummy patties that aren’t filled with carbs. We grilled these and wrapped them in lettuce with vegan cheese, tomatoes, onions, mustard, and pickles. Soooo good!
Yeah, wow… What a scathing comment. The reviewer is merely providing her opinion as is customary in a review of this nature. You are obviously free to try the product or not. For those of us that generally agree with her on her reviews and suggestions, her thumbs up/down are valuable.
Additionally, I like the fact that she reviews the ingredients list rather than just saying something tastes good.
Try waking up on the other side of the bed tomorrow.
