Costco Naleway Potato and White Cheddar Perogies Review

Perogies are a versatile comfort food. They work well as a main or a side and are a staple at lots of large gatherings where I’m from (Alberta, Canada). The only problem with perogies is that they’re not easy to make from scratch. Costco’s Naleway Potato and White Cheddar Perogies are very convenient, but are they tasty enough to replace the homemade version?

Perogies are something I grew up eating whenever my parents wanted a quick and convenient dinner. I like them with sautéed onions, bacon bits and of course sour cream! I decided to pick up this box of Costco Naleway Perogies to keep in my freezer for whenever I want a comfort meal with minimal effort.

Other convenient frozen items from Costco are the Costco Kirkland Signature Frozen Cheese Pizza, the Costco High Liner Miso Glazed Cod, the Costco Hampton House Popcorn Chicken, Costco Cuisine Adventures French Onion Soup, Costco Sabatasso’s Pizza Singles and the Costco Kirkland Signature Pepperoni Pizza.

Location in Store

You can find the perogies in the freezer aisle at Costco, the item number is 9940085.

Ready to enjoy!

Taste

The perogy shell is slightly chewy, but not overly thick. The shell tastes fine, but doesn’t have a noticeable flavor. The filling almost tastes like plain mashed potatoes. You don’t taste a lot of cheese. It’s tasty enough though.

The inside of the perogies is light and fluffy.

Overall, the perogies don’t have a lot of flavor on their own, but they do have a nice texture and they’re satisfying. Adding things like sour cream, onions and bacon can help in the flavor department! I enjoy these with garlic sausage but there’s many ways you can use them! I’ve seen cheddar sauce poured over perogies and have even seen a version of “nacho perogies” to give them that additional boost in the flavor department.

Cost

For the 10 pound box that includes four bags each weighing two and a half pounds the cost is $9.99 Canadian which is really cheap for so many perogies!

Each bag is two and a half pounds.

Convenience

The perogies need to be kept frozen and the bags do not reseal after opening, usually one two and a half pound bag is enough for my husband and I to have dinner with lots of leftovers. The best before date is 11 months from the date we purchased these.

Cooking instructions.

There are cooking instuctions on the box for boiling the perogies and cooking them in a fry pan. Both methods suggest making sure your perogies reach a minimal internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. I actually found baking instructions for perogies from Cheemo Perogies and I prefer to cook mine this way.

Nutrition

Calories

Three perogies is 140 calories, two and a half grams of fat, 25 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, three grams of sugar and 270 mg of sodium. I can easily eat like eight perogies with a bunch of sausage and sour cream so I obviously am eating way more than 140 calories.

Ingredients

The ingredients list is pretty short and simple, there’s white cheddar and parmesan cheese as well as flour and potato. Soy lecithin is used as an emulsifier and I find it’s pretty much in any product I see. If you have a soy, dairy or gluten allergy you may want to avoid these perogies. Perogies aren’t the most nutritious meal you can have but they’re quick and tasty.

  1. I think I figured out why Natalie may not have liked these.

Natalie baked them instead of boiling, which is why they’re not as moist and lacking in taste. You can definitely tell from the pictures—oven baking tends to dry them out and dull the flavor.

That said, for store-bought [ultra-processed] perogies, these are actually pretty good. They’ll never stack up to ‘traditional’ homemade ones with a ton of sharp cheddar, but they’re still decent.

To get the best flavor, you either need to boil them or fry them up in a bunch of butter. The potato flavor is strong, but there’s not much cheddar going on. If I was served the perogies the way Natalie prepared them, I wouldn’t eat them.

Overall, I’d say these are better than Cheemo, for sure. They they never go on sale at Costco (they have gone up in price to $2.53/kg) they are still the best of the ultra-processed kind. Even “home-made” frozen perogies you might find at specialty store are similar to the ultra-processed ones because they too lack much cheddar and tend to use potato flour instead of real potatoes, the same with the cheddar.

  2. We stick with Cheemo old fashioned perogies. You shouldn’t have to add all the additions to add flavour. Traditional perogies should have a tangy bite to them from the sharp cheddar. Otherwise you might as well just eat mashed potato dumplings with sour cream and bacon.

And no. Use an air fryer? Remember a few years ago InstaPot was all the rage? People were assuming it was a revelation. Now it’s an oven with forced air marketing companies are referring to them erroneously as an air fryer. Just don’t do it. Use a pan and oil or butter on the stove.
