I’ve heard that seaweed has amazing health benefits so when I was at Costco last time and saw the Kirkland Signature Organic Roasted Seaweed I decided to pick it up to try.

Taste

Let me be super honest! Seaweed as a snack is not my thing. It didn’t awful or anything and it definitely tasted like what is is (actual seaweed with some salt) but I discovered I don’t like the flavor of plain seaweed. I sadly felt like I was missing the rest of the sushi roll. The taste is salty, earthy… and seaweedy. My brother in-law who does enjoy snacking on seaweed told me he really enjoyed this when I gave him some to try! I think it comes down to personal preference.

Cost

I paid $12.99 Canadian (regular price) for the 10 packs of seaweed.

Convenience

When you buy this you get one big pack of 10 individual 17 gram packs of seaweed! Each pack is easy to bring to work or school in your lunch and also convenient to just have at home! The best before date was almost a year from when we purchased it as well. You could use this seaweed in many different ways, you can eat it plain or sprinkle over rice or even a salad.

Nutrition

One package is 100 calories, one gram of fibre, three grams of protein, 200 mg of sodium and nine grams of fat. The ingredients list is short and sweet with only four ingredients listed!

Obviously I won’t be buying this again because I just didn’t love it but if you like seaweed I would definitely check this out for a healthy snack!

Taste: 5/10 (I didn’t like it at all, but my seaweed loving brother-in-law did!)

Cost: 6/10

Convenience: 10/10

Nutrition: 9/10

Any interesting ideas on how to use this seaweed?

  1. I just bought those Kirkland Organic Seaweed snacks to boost my iodine, but the package doesn’t state what kind of seaweed(s) they use nor does the package have info on it containing iodine at all. Different types of seaweed contain different amounts of iodine so this info would be nice to know, but the only contact info on the packages is, Made in Korea & http://www.costco.com which isn’t very helpful. Our American diet is severely lacking in iodine so we need at least 50 mcg/day.

      • Everyone knows this. Take a look on Google for yourself. Also, it contains high levels of iodine which can easily cause thyroid issues. As someone with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis I know.

      • I actually looked it up based on this comment, and it is there. Here’s the source:

I do agree. It’s much better when people cite their source.

        • Did you actually sign up on the Consumer Lab website? They say you then receive an email telling you which 2 brands are safe, but, the email does not tell you, it just states that you have to pay to get any of those reports. So did you do that? If you are paying for the info can you please share with the rest of us which 2 are safe? Thanks.

    • How did you come to that conclusion. You shouldn’t make a statement like that without backing it up with some evidence.

For the record, the higher up the food chain the greater the levels of heavy metals. This is known as bioamplification. Seeweed is way down at the bottom of the food chain, whereas fish, animals, etc are on top. The bigger the animal the greater these heavy metals.

      • Actually this is untrue. Heavy metals sink, because they are “heavy” to the ocean floor where they are absorbed by plants like seaweed and crustaceans. Therefore a seaweed could contain more mercury for example than a fish that doesn’t eat seaweed or other seaweed eating fish.

  2. My 2 year old border collie mix did not enjoy it. The Aussie Shepherd puppy thought it was great! A convenient and lower cost option for dog supplements.
Seaweed has iodine, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium and other trace nutrients that can keep your dogs skin and coat healthy and shiny.
I personally think the flavor is reminiscent of fried fish skins.

  3. I tried it and it tastes like fish and sesame oil. It was also very oily. My 11 year old granddaughter ate the remaining 9 packages.
