Costco is carrying these gluten-free, organic, plant-based vegetable & sunflower seed veggie bites!

Today I’m reviewing a product that’s new to my local Costco. The Don Lee Farms Organic Veggie Bites. I tend to really like plant-based food and have been exploring more gluten-free foods lately so I wanted to try these when I saw them.

When I saw the bites I thought they looked similar to the Costco Sol Cuisine Plant Based Spinach Chickpea Bites. Other Costco plant-based foods I love are the Wholly Veggie Buffalo Cauliflower, Costco Traditions Forest Fruit Vegan Frozen Bars and the Costco MadeGood Red Velvet Mini Cookies.

Location in Store

You can find these veggie bites at Costco in the refrigerated deli section by the fresh pasta, refrigerated dessert and refrigerated appetizers. The item number is 1340640.

Taste

After tasting these, I don’t love them. They’re not awful or anything like that I just don’t find them that flavorful or tasty. The flavor is quite bland and they remind me of a mushed-up vegetable tater tot, which is essentially what they are. Just not a really yummy mushed-up vegetable tater tot. They’re very slightly salty and you can definitely taste that they’re made of vegetables.

I notice there’s also a hint of spiciness that is more of an aftertaste, just a tiny amount of heat, most likely from the herbs and spices used. After baking the bites, they get crisp on the outside and stay soft on the inside.

Cost

The price for the 794-gram container of veggie bites is $12.99 Canadian. This isn’t too expensive if you like them, but I can’t say I’m a huge fan.

Heating instructions.

Convenience

There are three methods to heat the veggie bites: in a microwave, a skillet, or the oven. I used the oven method, which involves preheating the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, placing the bites on a cookie sheet and cooking them in the oven for 10-12 minutes. The bites are already pre-cooked, so you’re just reheating them.

The best before date is just under a month from the date we purchased the veggie bites. However, the packaging states that once opened the veggie bites should be consumed within three days. I feel like these need a sauce to go along with them and they’d be best as a side dish or appetizer.

Nutrition

Calories

Six bites contain 170 calories, eight grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, three grams of fibre, four grams of sugar, three grams of protein and 280 milligrams of sodium. That’s actually not bad for six bites! Seeing the nutrition information makes me really wish I liked these more. The sodium is really reasonable and the fat and calories aren’t very high for six bites.

Ingredients

The fact these are called veggie bites is not at all misleading. These Costco Don Lee Farms Veggie Bites are full of veggies! They’re organic, plant-based as well as gluten-free and I actually love the ingredients listed. Maybe that’s why I don’t find them that tasty, because they’re not filled with a ton of unhealthy ingredients.

Overall

Give it a try!

I don’t love the taste but I love that these are loaded with vegetables, are gluten-free, plant-based and organic. I think trying them with some sauce would make them extra tasty!

Would you try these? If you have tried them, what do you think of them?

  1. These are absolutely delicious! Great in a sandwich, broken up with other veggies or in brown rice, or just on their own as a snack. BUT, COSTCO IN HAWAII NO LONGER CARRIES IT!!!!! If I hated it, I would see it every time I go, now I can never find it. Not cool Costco! Hawaii people eat as healthy as California people…..where are our veggies?

  2. i Love these! i’m not usually a fan of veggie-patty type things but these were flavorful, delicious, and i don’t need a dipping sauce, making them perfect for a bite on the go. i usually go the gym after work, but most times i haven’t eaten enough, and these are perfect size (i have three) and love them.

  3. I liked these at first but now can only eat one or two. Into the freezer they went. Today, I warmed a few in the microwave, then used them with fresh vegetables in a fried rice. I broke them in pieces and fried up with the fresh vegetables. Very good!

  4. I love these veggie bites! They are great as a late-afternoon snack. I heat up 4 tots in the microwave for 55 secs and they are crispy outside and soft and a little crunchy inside. Great snack! Hope to buy again! Thanks!

  5. My whole family loves these. Even the teenagers! I cook them in a frying pan with a tiny bit of olive oil and often add S+P and any other seasonings. Great with a salad, on a pita, or as a side snack. I will now freeze in portions though because we never finish them in 3 days. They don’t seem to go bad at all and we’ve had them open in the fridge for 7-10 days.

  7. Really like them and my grandson-14 months does too! Quick and easy and healthy to serve. Where did they go? Enough people like them, very sad that Costco doesn’t seem to carry anymore. Anyone know where else you can buy them?

  8. I thought they were good, slightly crispy and creamy inside, with a nice flavor. I serve these as a side dish and use a no sugar added ketchup from Heinz or a sugar free ketchup from Thrive. My husband ate them and hasn’t complained. I believe they store are a nice change from steamed veggies and the ingredient list is pretty good. I freeze them in portions. We might come up with casserole ideas or appetizer ideas. I hope they continue carrying them .

  9. I liked them in the skillet. I made a mayo/saracha sauce to go with. I froze the remainder as I live alone ~ they were still yummy

  10. I like them. They are great with a little duck sauce, but I didn’t have any so I improvised. Next time I had them with sugar free apricot preserves. Just what they need!

    • I love these things…the flavor reminds me of a vegetarian spring roll. Easy to cook in an air fryer, done in about 10 min. I don’t find them bland at all, very flavorful. I’ve tried them with a vegan ranch dressing and also a ginger soy dipping sauce, either way they rock.
