A creamy, hearty, convenient and tasty soup from Costco that’s great for cold winter days!
I’m reviewing the Costco Johnny’s Potato Cheddar Soup Mix today! I don’t know about where you are but here it’s VERY cold, which means soup weather! I picked this up during a recent trip to Costco when I was craving soup.
Other soups from Costco I’ve reviewed are the Costco Kirkland Signature Cheddar Broccoli Soup, Costco Kirkland Signature Tortilla Soup, Costco Authentic Asian Hand Wrapped Shrimp Wonton Soup and my favorite of all, the Costco Cuisine Adventures French Onion Soup.
Location in Store
I found the Johnny’s Potato Cheddar Soup Mix in the aisle with the salad dressings and other canned soups. The item number is 278688.
Taste
The soup is nice and thick and full of chunks of vegetables and potato, which is impressive considering it’s a dry soup mix. The soup has a pleasant potato cheddar smell. It’s not overly strong, but definitely noticeable.
The flavors in the soup are what you would expect. The cheddar flavor is quite mild, but still present and nice. The soup is very creamy, and there’s plenty of texture from the chunks of potato and vegetable. The potato seems to add to the thickness of the soup.
The vegetables are nice and flavorful considering they come out of the package totally dry. The chunks of carrot are especially tasty.
Overall, this is a creamy, hearty and tasty soup that’s ideal for cold winter days. I’m very impressed at the taste and texture of the soup considering it comes from a dry mix. I don’t think I would’ve guessed that if I did a blind taste test.
Cost
I paid $12.99 Canadian for the 907 gram box of soup. This is reasonable considering how one can of soup can be $3 to $5 dollars.
Convenience
You get six packets of soup mix in the box. Each packet is enough to make at least two big bowls of soup. The soup is really easy to make and has a best before date of about a over a year and a half from when we purchased it.
To make one pouch of soup you bring four cups of water to a rolling boil and add the pouch of soup mix. Reduce heat to medium and cook uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes.
This soup from Costco makes a quick and easy lunch or dinner. It goes well with freshly baked buns right out of the oven! I generally don’t buy powdered soup, usually I only purchase soup in a can but I’m more open to it after trying the Costco Johnny’s Potato Cheddar Soup Mix.

One serving (36 and 3/10 gram) is 150 calories, five grams of fat, 24 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, three grams of sugar, three grams of protein and 320 mg of sodium. If you add extra ingredients, like ham, milk or cream the calories will be more.
Ingredients
Although it has blue cheese listed as an ingredient you can’t taste any blue cheese flavor! The ingredients are pretty much what I would except to see for a soup that comes in a pouch.

Overall
Give it a try!
This was better than I expected it to be! To make it more flavorful and hearty you could add some ham, cream and additional fresh vegetable.

I love this as a soup base I even use it in my clam chowder, it seems to of been discontinued in Richmond, BC, & I cant find it on Costco.ca Help!!!
How can I order the potato soup as our Costco doesn’t have it in the warehouse?
I enjoy using the Johnny’s potato and cheese soup as a base for fish chowder… I use a can of salmon with the broth as well as a can of clams wit the broth. I add grated carrotts, celery, broccoli florets and corn… I don’t actually add the fish until near the end but add the broths at the beginning as part of the liquids..
Makes a great chowder and is an easy camping meal too!!
What a great way to use it!
I have used this a number of times but I usually add extra vegetables – onions, etc. It actually will work as a base if you want to add broccoli to make a broccoli soup or cauliflower to make cauliflower soup. Also, I have added quite a few different veggies to make a cream of vegetable soup. This is a pantry staple.
Great idea adding extra vegetables!
I made this according to the directions (simmer 15-20 minutes) and thought it needed more. The second time, I cooked it gently for 45 minutes and was much more pleased with the softer texture of the vegetables and the creaminess of the liquid. This would be a great staple pantry product or a great addition to a care package for your university student!
I was disappointed with this soup. This could be because I was expecting it to be as wonderful as the Bear Creek soup was and it definitely was not. Bear Creek potato soup was thick, creamy with bigger chunks of potatoes and low (or no) salt which I found amazing because the flavour was great.
Another reader just posted the same thing about this soup! That they miss the Bear Creek soup.
Years ago, Costco carried Bear Creek Potato Soup mix which was a dry soup in a tub. It was very good and they carried it for at least a couple of years, then stopped. I wonder if this soup is comparable.
I’ve never tried the bear creek but now I’m curious too if it tastes as good!
I find this powder “plastic” soup not bad. I add a bit more boiling water than the directions as it is more like a chowder consistency without it. But make no mistake. It tastes like powder, not a canned or homemade soup.
Definitely agree!
