This review is for all my keto, low-carb people! Full disclosure: I’m a carb loving girl so I definitely can’t say I’m on a keto diet or even a low-carb diet. I do however respect those who are on the keto diet or that are trying to lower their carb intake so today I’m reviewing the Costco Carbonaut Low Carb Multigrain and White Keto Bread.

If you’re currently following the keto diet, add this product to your low-carb Costco shopping list!

This can be found with all the other bread at Costco and the item number for the multigrain bread is 1494429. The item number for the white bread is 1565961.

Taste

Alright so here’s my honest opinion about this product. It’s not that bad! Honestly it’s not as awful tasting as I expected it to be. It actually does resemble bread and tastes slightly similar. There are a few things I’ll point out though.

Multigrain Bread

First of all the bread is very soft and spongey, even toasted. Basically I could roll this up and make a little ball with it so the texture is definitely different than regular bread. Also both my husband and I noticed it had a bitter aftertaste that lingers in your mouth. I’m not sure where that’s coming from but it was noticeable.

The seeds on the outside are great because it makes it seem more like normal bread and also adds some extra crunchy texture. I wouldn’t choose that over regular bread but if I were on a keto diet this would probably taste amazing. Especially turned into a grilled cheese or slathered with butter.

White Bread

To try the white bread I toasted it and put a little butter on top. The first thing that I noticed is that the bread is quite light when you compare it to normal bread. It toasts nicely though and can almost pass for normal bread/toast.

Toasted with butter – this is the white bread

There’s the same slight bitterness in the white bread that there is in the multigrain bread that I notice after chewing for a few seconds. The bitterness is less noticeable than it is for most keto bread products. The flavor of the white bread reminds me of the flavor of The Grain Escape Gluten-Free Buns I also reviewed.

Cost

I paid $8.99 Canadian for both the bag of Costco Multigrain and White Carbonaut Low Carb, Keto Bread. You get two loaves in the bag, each loaf is 544 grams.

This isn’t that expensive considering how much some keto products cost!

Convenience

I popped my bread into the freezer as soon as I brought it home and it freezes well. The best before date on the bread is about a week from the date I purchased the bread.

This can be toasted and makes a great bread option for those who are on keto or are following a low-carb diet.

Overall

Give it a try!

This bread is probably amazing for those who are on a strict keto diet. I didn’t love the taste (the texture and bitter aftertaste are my main complaints) but that’s most likely because I eat regular bread all the time! I’d say if you’re really watching your carbs or are on keto, give this a try.

Have you tried these breads? What did you think of them?

    • Resistant starch. Essentially the flours are processed to convert conventional start into “resistant”, which makes it almost undigestible. In this way, it becomes a fiber. You can replicate this with other starchy foods like potatoes and rice by cooking and then chilling overnight (or freezing). The cooling process restructures the starch molecules, making them more compact, and thus “resistant” to digestion. And it works! I’ve been able to reduce my A1C from 8.2 to around 6.6 by consuming these types of products.

  1. Carbonaut 1 net carb white bread is much less than desirable. It has large air gaps in several slices in the loaf. In your mouth it is gooey and sticky like raw dough! And it’s more expensive than the Sola brand of low carb bread.

  2. I haven’t been on a low carb diet for years. I’m going back. I was thrilled at the taste and texture of this bread. I recall former low carb breads tasting more like cardboard.
I love that it’s soft. I have the multigrain one in the purple bag. It’s not cheap but I love the taste of the toasted seeds. If this company makes other equally yummy products. Bring it on. I’m in Toronto.
Thank you Costco for carrying it.

  3. Can’t believe no one has commented on the texture – I love the taste no problem there but it simply falls apart – I have purchased 3 loaves so far hoping for different results but no luck, can’t even get one slice without it tearing apart – surely others are finding this to be the case. WHY does it fall apart??!! I don’t mind the price if I were only able to get my money’s worth of product.

  4. Try making this yourself. Quite tasty. Takes 60 minutes in my oven to cook completely. I toast it, add butter, maybe a tiny bit of jam. Low carb. Cheaper than buying $8 loaves of bread.

  5. Has anyone else got violently ill within 2- 3 hours of eating this bread? I thought I’d try out the one loaf I put in the freezer and no 3 hours later violently vomiting for 3 hours. This is the 4th and last time I try it!

    • I didn’t get violently ill but I was certainly nauseous. I did not find that it tasted like regular flour breads as others have claimed. I found it mealy with a chalky texture once you are chewing it. I’ve tried toasting it and having it plain. Not a fan at all. Will not purchase again. Far better flavourful with bread-like texture brands out there!

    • Two net carbs per slice. Four net carbs per sandwich. I’m type 2 diabetes and I can eat a carbonaut pb sandwich plus a small apple and my blood glucose numbers barely move. It makes great pizza toast too!

  8. I’m a diabetic and these breads allow me to have toast for breakfast and sandwiches at lunch without elevating my blood sugars. They are an absolute god send for me. They are the most ‘bread like’ of the keto breads that I have tried. (Some keto breads seem to just be seeds and nuts with a little binder to hold them together.) They are also the most reasonably priced. the price is now $9.99 for a bag of 2 loaves.

  9. I am a strict keto eater and was offered the gluten free white bread which I used as burger buns. It was great! It was slightly toasted and seem larger than most LC breads I’ve eaten. Anyway I was planning a trip to Sprouts and Whole Foods (where they purchased theirs) to grab a loaf to see if it’s as good as I remember. These reviews make me hopeful:)
    Thanks

  10. Like Terrance Bolger (see cmment above), I’m also a type 2 diabetic and have switched to Carbonaut multigrain bread. Much better tasting than the thin and airy Silver Hills cardboard bread and many fewer net cards and the equal in taste to Stonemill Sourdough Rye which I’d been using before the appearance of Carbonaut.

Highly recommended! Please, Costco, as a public service, keep carrying this brand which is so helpful in controlling diabetes.

  11. The Costco in Midlothian, Virginia had this for a short tome, but discontinued it. It is awesome. When I realized it was being discontinued (asterisk on the sign), I bought the last 4 loaves they had and froze them. Nearly out and need a new source (I really wish Costco would reconsider).

  12. My initial reaction was very positive to a low carb, affordable, keto-friendly bread. Purchased a double pack and enjoyed toast for first time in many months. The love affair faded quickly however upon researching the “high oleic sunflower oil” which I consider poisonous due to the incredibly high Omega 6 content. The high Oleic properties gives the bread a longer shelf life (preservative). If the bread didn’t contain THIS seed oil then I would heartily endorse and continue to enjoy consuming it, regretfully, won’t be spending hard earned cash to shorten my life span.

  13. I’m a type-II diabetic and trying to keep my carb count low. I have tried a number of breads with low net carbs but I find this one to be the best textured, best tasting of all that I have tried. I was surprised to read that the author has an issue with the taste. I thought it tasted great and have never detected any after-taste. I use it for my sandwich at lunch every day I can get it. I keep it in the freezer and just thaw it as I need it.
To me it is like a rough old fashioned whole-grain bread. I find it very satisfying and it does not seem to bother my glucose levels.

  14. Love Love Love this bread!.. I just wish Costco here would get the gluten free and cinnamon varieties. I love the aroma when toasting it. My son are big fans now and have been enjoying all our favorite oldies that we were missing. I keep one loaf in the fridge, and the rest in the freezer till needed. Thank you Carbonaut!
