Costco Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix Review

Just add water to this Costco pancake mix to make fluffy, delicious pancakes!

Today I’m reviewing the Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix from Costco. I’m always very skeptical about pancake mixes that only require adding water. I can’t imagine how a pancake mix can taste good without added eggs and milk.

This is a big bag of mix!

Other Krustez products from Costco I’ve tried are the Costco Krusteaz Meyer Lemon Bar Mix, Costco Krusteaz Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix and the Krusteaz Pumpkin Spice Quick Bread Mix. My favorite pancake mix from Costco is the Kodiak Cakes.

Mmm! How good does this stack of pancakes look?

Taste

I love how these pancakes turned out. The texture is thick and fluffy soft on the inside, golden brown with the slightest crispness on the outside. They taste delicious and are rich in buttermilk flavor, but not overly sweet or heavy.

Ready to enjoy!

I’m not missing the eggs or milk at all! The Krusteaz Buttermilk Pancake Mix pancakes taste similar to diner-style pancakes.

I like my pancakes with Kirkland Signature Maple Syrup and butter but you could slather Costco Kirkland Hazelnut Spread on top of these too.

Cost

This huge 4.53 kilogram bag of Costco pancake mix costs $9.79 Canadian. That’s a ton of pancakes or waffles for not a lot of money!

Convenience

These pancakes are ridiculously easy to whip up. All I have to do is add water to the pancake mix and then of course cook the pancakes! This is a huge bag and the best before date is almost a year from the date when I purchased the mix.

I keep the bag in my basement where it’s dry and cool because we only eat pancakes every so often. I think this mix is perfect for people that have to cook up a bunch of pancakes for an event or large party. At one point I think Krusteaz even had a special offer where they would give people hosting large pancake breakfasts a partial rebate.

Nutrition

Calories

Half a cup of mix contains 210 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 660 milligrams of sodium, 45 grams of carbohydrates, 11 grams of sugar, four grams of protein and one gram of fibre. The amount of sugar and salt is surprising, because you don’t really taste the pancakes being very salty or sweet. If you’re on a low-carb diet, you may want to consider eating less of these pancakes.

Ingredients

I don’t love the ingredients list. It seems like there’s lots of chemical-sounding ingredients and I wish they didn’t include soybean oil. The pancake mix contains wheat, milk, eggs and barley, but those are pretty standard ingredients in pancakes.

Overall

Must buy!

We’re on our second bag of this mix and my husband really loves these pancakes every time I make them! Personally I like the Kodiak Cakes, but we’ll keep buying the Krusteaz pancake mix for him.

Have you tried this pancake mix from Costco? What did you think?

  1. Way better than Pearl Milling, or Hungry Jack, and all the other brands have this off putting roach spray-ish kind of taste. And no, I’ve never tasted roach spray. This is my favorite brand now. I will try mixing it with milk instead of water, and adding the vanilla extract to see how it tastes.

  2. i read your review of the krusteaz and kodiak pancake mixes. i like them both, the krusteaz is alot cheaper in the long run. i might just jolly well by some whole wheat flour or other goodies to add to the kursteaz for extra nutrition and flavour. have the kodiak now and then, and use the krusteaz more often. however i like to make my pancake mix best from scratch. one thing i like about the krusteaz is the resealable bag which makes it nice. i may even try mixing the two pancake mixes together at some point in time. thank you for your reviews. they are interesting and quite useful too. thanks

  3. My family loves this mix. I have tried different brands and nobody likes them. When I make my Pancake I always add quick oat. That’s the only way my girls will eat Oatmeal lol.

  4. I do actually make these with milk rather than water to ramp up the nutritional value a little. I also add either a teaspoon or two of vanilla or lemon extract.

  5. I recently purchased this product when it went on sale. I was very pleased with the product and how easy it is to make. I used to make my pancakes from scratch but these are just as good without the bother of having buttermilk on hand.
    My family loves them.
