Meat pies are the perfect comfort food: a savory pastry filled with a meat filling—whether it’s beef, chicken, or lamb usually combined with gravy, potatoes, and vegetables, all baked inside a golden, flaky crust. They’re the kind of meal that’s perfect for cozying up with on a freezing winter night
Costco carries it’s own Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie in the pre-made deli department which I’ve had and enjoyed but I was curious to try these Greenfield Natural Meat Co. Beef Pies when I saw them. I’m wondering if these are the perfect no-fuss, convenient meal to have on hand during the winter.
Location in Store
These are located in the freezer section at Costco, the item number is 1811167.
Taste
After taking the pie out of the oven I noticed that the edges were golden brown and crispy. The pie was extremely hot so I recommend giving it a few minutes to cool before you dive in. Overall I think the flavor of the meat, gravy, onions and potatoes is really nice and tasty, it’s salty but not overly so.
There’s an adequate amount of ground beef in the pie but not a ton, I could do with a little more meat. It’s a pastry heavy pie, but I find most pot pies are. One thing I appreciate is that the bottom of the pie crust seemed crispy and not soggy.
The flavor of the filling kind of reminds me of Shepherd’s pie, which is a good thing. There’s chunks of potatoes, onions and there also seems to be like a mashed potato mixed with the ground beef. My one complaint is a I got a few hard bits in the ground beef which were hard to chew. Hard bits are common with ground beef but it kind of turns me off.
Cost
There are four pies in the box, each pie is enough for one adult and the box costs $15.99 Canadian. That’s about four dollars per pie so these aren’t cheap!
Convenience
I baked the pie at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 55 minutes and the internal temperature was above 165 when I pulled it out of the oven. I attempted to take the meat pie out of the aluminum pie shell it came in but the pie would have just fallen apart so I kept it in it.
You can microwave or bake the pies and I always choose the oven method over the microwave method for any foods. One thing I found really odd is the pies are packaged in the box without any additional wrapping and the box doesn’t reseal. I appreciate that they’re reducing plastic use but I was a bit surprised!
My toddler daughter took one bite of this meat pie and that was all for her but I think a lot of people who enjoy ground beef pies will like them.
Nutrition
Calories
One meat pie contains 810 calories, 49 grams of fat, 68 grams of carbohydrates, five grams of fibre, zero grams of sugar, 25 grams of protein and 1220 milligrams of sodium. That’s a lot of sodium, fat, carbs and calories!
Ingredients
The ingredients list is actually pretty short and sweet but I don’t love a few things about it. I wish the pastry had real butter instead of palm oil and vegetable oil in it. I also wish the filling had olive oil or avocado oil in it instead of canola oil but these are small complaints!
The meat pies contain eggs and wheat but do not contain dairy so for those who are dairy-intolerant it’s probably a good thing there’s no butter in the pastry. The box also states the cattle is raised without the use of antibiotics and is grass-fed.

I agree with the lack of protection in the packaging. We tried them and they ended up in the garbage. Would not feed them to a dog. Just awful
Why so much sodium?
Started with Costcos own meat pies a number of years ago but found I got diarrhea from an or some ingredients in the pie. Moved on to Marie Callenders and was quite satisfied. Discovered Greenfield in the pasta section at Costco and really enjoyed them. When I returned to Costco they were no longer where I found them so felt they were another Costco one shot item. About a month ago found them close to Marie Callenders and have been buying them ever since. Enjoy everything about them but especially the flavour of the pastry. Being a senior and living alone I find the 4 pies suit me just fine.
“At $4 a pie…. these aren’t cheap”??
Oh my gosh! That’s very cheap imho. I buy and love the best meat pies ever from The Pie Commission made in Toronto and sold in various grocery stores. The amazing pastry is made with butter and all the nutritional specs are off the charts so we don’t eat them very often. The size is similar and they’re $9.95 each. But I’ve never bitten into “hard bits” or anything else objectionable. I can highly recommend them 😋
For the money I will stick with the Marie Callenders Ck Pot Pies that can be had on sale for less than 9 bucks for 8 of them and those have big chunks of white meat chicken in them and are quite tasty.
Yes but not a beef pie hence the difference in price.
