Costco Realgood Foods Chicken & Pepper Jack Cheese Burritos Review

Anyone who knows me will tell you my favorite kind of food is Mexican. The usually satisfying flavor combination of chicken and cheese along with the filling nature of burritos is what made me want to try these Realgood Foods Chicken & Pepper Jack Cheese Burritos from Costco. I was unsure about trying a store-bought, packaged burrito so keep reading to find out what I thought of them.

Location in Store

These are located in the refrigerated deli section at Costco, near the fresh pasta like the Kirkland Signature Organic Spinach & Cheese Ravioli. The item number is 6662510.

Taste

The first thing that I noticed when eating my burrito was that it was a little bit tortilla-heavy, especially at the ends. The middle part was better, but the tortillas do seem a little heavy compared to the ones used in burritos I’ve had at places like Chipotle.

The filling is tasty, though kind of overly processed. All of the ingredients are blended together into a sort of paste which is similar to the filling in the Catarina Chicken Quesadillas and the El Monterey Chicken & Cheese Taquitos from Costco.

The burrito filling tastes like cheesy chicken with a mild to moderate amount of heat. It’s not as flavorful as eating a burrito with fresh, distinct ingredients, but it’s enjoyable. It kind of reminds me more of the filling you might find in a quesadilla. Adding things like sour cream and salsa on the side definitely helps.

Cost

The package comes with four burritos and costs $14.99 Canadian, which isn’t cheap! It’s cheaper than buying a burrito at a restaurant or gas station but that’s still $3.75 a burrito.

Convenience

We heated our burritos in the oven and they hadn’t reached 165 degrees Fahrenheit internally after 20 minutes. We put them back in the oven for another 5 minutes, but then when we pulled them out they had exploded their filling out.

They came out of the oven fairly crispy, so we decided not to bother with pan frying them. The burritos need to be kept refrigerated and I’m sure you could freeze them if you weren’t going to use them by the expiry date.

These make a convenient lunch or dinner, one burrito can easily be brought to work or school and microwaved. I think kids would probably like these as a treat for lunch.

Nutrition

Calories

One burrito contains 450 calories, 28 grams of fat, 33 grams of carbohydrates, 20 grams of fibre, four grams of sugar, 37 grams of protein and 980 milligrams of sodium. These burritos are pretty high in calories, fat and sodium but most burritos are.

A positive about the burritos is how much protein one burrito contains!

Ingredients

I don’t expect a product like this to be healthy or super nutritious and I see a lot of ingredients I don’t like. These ingredients I don’t like are soy/pal oil, natural flavors, preservatives like nicin and sodium metabisulfite and food additives like mono and diglycerides.

The burritos contain wheat, egg, milk, soy and sulphites.

Overall

Give it a try!

Overall these burritos aren’t anything special, but they’re an enjoyable comfort food and I think most people will be satisfied with them. They have a little bit of heat, but not enough to put anyone but the most sensitive people off.
