Costco Kirkland Signature Custard Pie Review

Custard pie is a simple dessert made with cream, eggs and sugar. It’s light and refreshing; perfect on a hot day or after a heavy meal. Sometimes simple desserts like this can be hard to execute well though. They can easily turn out bland and boring.

If custard pie isn’t appealing to you, that’s okay! Costco carries a variety of delicious cakes and pies like the Kirkland Signature Pumpkin Pie, Kirkland Signature Chicken Pot Pie, Kirkland Signature Homestyle Apple Pie, Kirkland Signature Peanut Butter Chocolate Cream Pie, Kirkland Signature Rhubarb Strawberry Crumble Pie, Kirkland Signature Wild Blueberry Lattice Pie and the Kirkland Signature Apple Crumble Pie.

Location in Store

We bought this in Kona, Hawaii. It can be found in the refrigerated bakery section and the item number is 1282399.

Taste

The pie is light, sweet and pretty plain. I can’t say I love it but that’s likely because I love very chocolaty, rich desserts or sweet fruity pies.

The filling is very light and fluffy so if you’ve had a heavy meal this is actually quite a refreshing dessert. The custard is sweet but not overly sugary and it has a mild vanilla flavor. The texture of the custard is a bit like scrambled eggs.

The pie crust seems pretty good. It’s flaky, a bit salty and brown around the edges. The crust is also quite soft towards the center. but not soggy or raw, just soft. The crust is also quite thin which I appreciate because then you can taste the true flavor of the custard.

Cost

The pie costs $14.99 USD which isn’t very expensive compared to other Costco desserts considering the size of the pie. However, this is a very basic, plain dessert. There’s not much to it so the price seems about right to me.

Convenience

The pie needs to be kept refrigerated and has a best before date that’s two days from the date we purchased it. I’m not sure when it was actually put out though because the label doesn’t have a packaged on date.

This is the perfect dessert for someone who likes custard and doesn’t enjoy super rich, heavy desserts. I’m not sure kids would like it because it’s lacking in chocolate and sprinkles but you could give it a try! You could add some ice cream, fresh fruit, chocolate sauce or fruit coulis to the pie to add some flavor.

Nutrition

Calories

1/12th of the pie contains 410 calories, 29 grams of fat, 170 milligrams of sodium, 35 grams of carbohydrates, 24 grams of sugar and seven grams of protein. This is definitely loaded in sugar, fat, and calories but what pie isn’t?

Ingredients

The ingredients list is unsurprisingly full of unhealthy ingredients like carrageenan, mono & diglycerides, sugar, shortening, dextrose and soybean oil. The custard pie contains wheat, milk, egg and may contain peanuts, tree nuts and sesame.

Give it a try!

This is pretty plain but good, if you know you like custard, I think you’ll enjoy this.

  1. Hmmm…. my first reaction to reading your description was to think that’s not custard! Sounds almost like mousse? Traditional custard is a creamy, dense and rich dessert served often in the fall and winter. Maybe it’s an American interpretation? Not one I’ll be buying. So thanks for your review 😁
