I absolutely love cereal and eat it all the time but it can be loaded with sugar, carbohydrates and sometimes even fat. This Catalina Crunch Keto Friendly Cereal is low in carbs, plant-based, gluten-free and has zero grams of added sugar. I picked up a bag but am a little skeptical if this Catalina Crunch can satisfy my regular cravings for cereal.
Other cereals and granols from Costco I’ve reviewed are the Innofoods Almond Fruit Crunch Cereal, Innofoods Keto Cereal, Anahola Granola, Nature’s Path Organic Pumpkin Seed and Flax Granola, Kirkland Signature Granola, Kirkland Signature Nature’s Path Ancient Grains Granola and the Prana Granolove Oatmeal Cookie Crunch Granola.
Location in Store
I actually bought this in Kalispell, Montana but ate it and forgot to post my review for it! The item number is 1557807.
Taste
After my first bite of this cereal I was like “okay this is really good” but after a few more bites and experiencing the aftertaste in my mouth I decided it’s just okay. The texture of the cereal is nice and crunchy but it leaves a chalky film in your mouth.
I also could distinctly taste that it was sweetened with artificial sweetener that also left a bit of an aftertaste. If you have it with milk or almond milk the chalkiness and artificial sweetener flavor are a little masked.
I will say that if you’re actually on a keto diet or really watching your carbs and want a gluten-free, dairy-free diet this will taste pretty amazing. It’s crunchy, sweet and has a noticeable cinnamon flavor.
Cost
The 1.25 pound bag costs $10.99 USD which isn’t bad for a product that’s marketed as being keto and plant-based.
Convenience
The bag reseals which helps keep the cereal fresh and has a best before date that’s about a year from when I purchased it. I tried the cereal with almond milk and just dry and actually prefer just snacking on a dry handful.
This can be enjoyed as a breakfast item, snack or even as a dessert because it’s so sweet! The bag recommends using up the cereal within three weeks of opening it and storing it in a cool, dry place.
Nutrition
Calories
A 1/2 cup serving contains 110 calories, five grams of fat, 110 milligrams of sodium, 14 grams of carbohydrates, nine grams of fiber, zero grams of sugar and 11 grams of protein.
The carbohydrates aren’t really all that low but the fiber helps to offset the carbs. There’s also a decent amount of protein!
Ingredients
The Catalina Crunch is gluten-free, plant-based and vegan. The ingredients list is pretty short and I wouldn’t say any of the ingredients listed are actually really healthy or nutritious. The artificial sweeteners in the cereal are stevia and monk fruit extract.
Note that the cereal is made in a facility that also produces foods with peanuts, milk and tree nuts.
Scoring
Taste: 7/10
Cost: 8/10
Convenience: 10/10
Nutrition: 4/10 (Not exactly nutritious but great for people on a low-carb, keto diet).
Overall
Give it a try!
