Costco Kewpie Roasted Garlic Onion Dressing & Marinade Review

A good everyday salad dressing has the perfect balance of savory, salty, slightly sweet and a bit tangy. This Costco Kewpie Roasted Garlic Onion Dressing & Marinade caught my eye as a “multipurpose dressing” and I picked up a bottle hoping it fulfill all my dressing and marinading needs! So did my hopes come true? Is this something I’d buy over and over again? Find out below!

Other dressings, sauces and marinades from Costco I’ve enjoyed are the Kewpie Deep Roasted Sesame Dressing & Marinade, Johnny’s Black Garlic Vinaigrette, KFI Butter Chicken Sauce, Kinder’s The Chicken Sauce, Bulls-Eye Barbecue Sauce, Rao’s Marinara Sauce and the Kirkland Signature Organic Marinara from Tuscany.

Taste

As you might expect, the dressing has a fairly strong aroma. The garlic and onion smells are there, but the smell of soy sauce is almost equally noticeable.

The soy flavor really stands out.

The soy sauce flavor is also very noticeable when you taste the dressing. I would say it was the first thing I noticed. It’s definitely a salty dressing, but not unpleasantly so. The garlic and onion flavors are there too, though I found it a bit challenging to notice them separately, if that makes sense. The dressing has an enjoyable bit of creaminess to it.

Ready to try!

Overall I enjoyed the Kewpie Roasted Garlic & Onion Dressing & Marinade as a salad dressing. The strong soy sauce flavor was a bit of a surprise to me and makes me think it could work well in an Asian-themed salad. I’m curious to try it as marinade.

The dressing is nice and creamy.

Cost

The 887 milliliter bottle costs $9.99 Canadian at Costco, which isn’t bad for such a large bottle of dressing. I find if you use it as a marinade you go through it a lot quicker than if you use it as a salad dressing.

A versatile dressing & marinade!

Convenience

We used this as a salad dressing and it worked well! I think it would work on a variety of salads but I want to try it on a cold noodle salad. The bottle needs to be kept refrigerated after opening and the best before date is about nine months from when I purchased it.

A little dressing goes a long way.

I think this would be a great marinade for chicken or pork. It would also be great used in stir-fry, it’s a pretty versatile sauce.

Nutrition

Calories

One tablespoon contains 50 calories, four and a half grams of fat, two grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of fiber, two grams of sugar, less than a gram of protein and 200 milligrams of sodium.

The sodium is high but the calories, sugar and carbs aren’t horrible! I think most people use a little more than one tablespoon as a salad dressing and quite a bit more than a tablespoon when using it as a marinade.

Ingredients

The ingredients list has pretty much what you’d expect to see in a salad dressing/marinade that tastes like this! The base of the dressing is canola oil (I prefer avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil but those cost more money). The dressing has sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame seeds, yeast extract, onion, garlic, egg yolk and a thickener!

It’s really hard to know what “natural flavours” are because they can be pretty much anything. The dressing contains egg, soy, wheat, sesame and mustard.

Overall

Give it a try!

I like this as a salad dressing and will definitely use my bottle up. I’ve also got a few ideas on how I can use it as a marinade!
