It’s not easy to find gluten-free, dairy-free cookies but Costco never fails at delivering something for everyone! These Poppie’s Belgian Coconut Cookies are actually made in Belgium and seem like the perfect little snack to curb any sweet craving. Is it worth buying a bag? Find out below!
Other gluten-free options from Costco are the Little Northern Bakehouse Seeds & Grains Gluten Free Bread, Sabatasso’s Gluten-Free Four Cheese Pizza, Brazi Bites, Banza Chickpea Pasta, Jojo’s Guilt-Free Chocolate, Pinty’s Buffalo Chicken Flings, Milton’s Cauliflower Crust Pizza and the E&C’s Heavenly Hunks.
Location in Store
I found the Poppies in the bakery department at Costco, the item number is 1778629.
Taste
These cookies surprised me! For some reason, I expected them to be hard and crunchy, but they’re actually very soft and kind of chewy. The cookies are basically shredded coconut with a chocolate base and chocolate drizzle.
They have an enjoyable coconut flavor with the coconut texture you’d expect. They’re slightly dry, but that’s kind of typical of coconut treats like this in my experience. The chocolate is decent, but not amazing. It goes well with the coconut cookie.
Overall these cookies were a pleasant surprise! I really liked how soft and chewy they were. I think people who follow gluten-free diets will be even more impressed since they’re tasty even for a gluten-eater!
Cost
The 500-gram bag containing 20 cookies costs $11.99 Canadian at Costco which isn’t super expensive but not exactly cheap either for something that’s basically just coconut, sugar and a drizzle of chocolate.
Convenience
The best before date listed on the cookies is about nine months from when I purchased them. Each cookie is individually wrapped in plastic so you can easily pop one in your lunch, purse or glove compartment.
The Poppies can be enjoyed morning, afternoon or evening. They’re a light sweet treat and are great to have around to offer any guests who are gluten-free and/or dairy-free.
Nutrition
Calories
One Poppie cookie contains 120 calories, six grams of fat, 15 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, 12 grams of sugar, one gram of protein and five milligrams of sodium.
The fat in one cookie is a bit high compared to other cookies but that’s from the coconut. The calories, sugar and carbohydrates are pretty typical for a sweet cookie!
Ingredients
Although the ingredients list isn’t long, it’s certainly not full of whole, simple foods. The first ingredient is obviously sugar but I don’t love seeing palm oil as the fat and the additive sorbitan tirstearate.
It’s really hard to find a cookie without sugar, additives and palm oil in it these days unless you’re making them from scratch at home! The cookies contain soy and eggs and may contain milk and tree nuts.
