Costco Kirkland Signature Carrot Mini Cakes Review

Costco has started selling a few different kinds of mini cakes in the past year or so. I tried the Kirkland Signature Raspberry Mini Cakes back in the summer and I picked up these Kirkland Signature Carrot Mini Cakes on my last shopping trip.

These “mini cakes” look an awful lot like Kirkland Signature Muffins with icing on top, but the flavors seem to be different. I love a good carrot cake, so I was excited to try these even though I was a bit skeptical about how good the icing would be given that they aren’t refrigerated.

Other Costco cakes I recommend are the Kirkland Signature Biscoff Cream Cake, Kirkland Signature Maple Pecan Coffee Cake, Kirkland Signature Tiramisu Cake, Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Cake, Kirkland Signature Hazelnut Loaf, Kirkland Signature Pumpkin Spice Loaf, Kirkland Signature Cheesecake and the Kirkland Signature Strawberry Shortcake.

Location in Store

These mini carrot cakes can be found in the unrefrigerated bakery section. The item number is 1792264.

Taste

The cake has a mild but pleasant taste. I’ve had more flavorful carrot cakes, but it’s good. I love how moist it is and it’s full of texture from the pineapple, raisins and walnuts (and they definitely add to the flavor profile too).

Although they’re called mini cakes they’re not that small!

I was a bit skeptical about the icing. Since the mini cakes aren’t refrigerated, I was worried the icing would be super sweet and light on cream cheese. I ended up being pleasantly surprised! It’s a fairly sweet icing, but it has a really nice cream cheese flavor. I didn’t find the sweetness overpowered the other flavors.

Overall I really enjoyed these Carrot Mini Cakes! I love a good carrot cake and they’re a pretty good version. These carrot mini cakes along with the cinnamon roll mini cakes are my favorite mini cakes so far.

Cost

The cost is $10.99 for six mini cakes, which is pretty reasonable. A mini cake is too much for me, I can eat about half so I think $10.99 for 12 servings of cake is a decent price.

Convenience

The cakes come in a plastic resealable container that can be easily popped into a freezer. The best-before date is four days from when they were packaged. They do sweat a bit and get a little soggy by day four in the container so if you’re not going to eat them right away, I recommend freezing them.

I think kids will go crazy for the icing since it’s so good! I shared these with my parents and all four of us who tried them enjoyed them. They’d be great with morning or afternoon tea or as a dessert.

Calories

One-third of a cake contains 370 calories, 20 grams of fat, 43 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre, 32 grams of sugar, five grams of protein and 200 milligrams of sodium.

Ingredients

I love seeing cream cheese and butter in the icing! The ingredients list really isn’t much different than what people would use to make a carrot cake at home. The cakes contain wheat, egg, milk, walnut and soy and may contain other tree nuts, peanuts and sesame.

I was a bit surprised by how good the icing was! If you like carrot cake, I wouldn’t hesitate to pick these up as a treat.

  1. I snagged these muffins on sale, excited because carrot cake is an absolute favorite. Sadly, apart from the cream cheese icing, they were a [major] letdown. The icing, while tasty, was overwhelmingly sweet though.

Despite a quick zap in the microwave, the carrot cake muffins turned out dry and almost flavorless. It was an incredible disappointment, and I couldn’t help but wonder how Costco managed to botch carrot cake.

The fact that there were plenty left on a busy Saturday raised a red flag for us. We’ll definitely be returning these.

      • Wow that’s a lot of calories then. It does coincide with google. For 250g of carrot cake it seems like ~1100 calories is correct. Good lord. Have to pass on this one, that’s almost as many calories as I eat in a whole day!
