Costco Rana Maine Lobster Ravioli Review

Lobster-stuffed pasta is something I’d expect to see on the menu at a fancy restaurant and not necessarily at my local Costco! This Rana Maine Lobster Ravioli offers a reasonably economical and easy way to enjoy lobster-stuffed pasta at home. Will it fool you into thinking you’re eating a dish prepared by an expert chef using freshly caught lobsters, or does it compromise on taste to deliver convenience and value?

Other pre-made fresh kinds of pasta from Costco are the Rana Butternut Squash Ravioli, Kirkland Signature Organic Spinach & Cheese Ravioli, Monterey Gourmet Foods Spinach & Cheese Ravioli, Scoiattolo Grilled Vegetable Ravioli, Kirkland Signature Five Cheese Tortelloni, Rana Beef & Short Rib Lasagna, Kirkland Signature Chicken Penne Alfredo and the Kirkland Signature Meat Lasagna.

Location in Store

This is located in the refrigerated deli section, near the other fresh pasta, tofu and refrigerated packaged meals and appetizers. The item number is 1553498.

Taste

I love lobster and only have it usually once or twice a year so I was excited to try this ravioli. Unfortunately, I don’t love it like I hoped to! I don’t normally pair lobster with cheese and I can’t say I love the combination. Instead of any lobster flavor, I taste a lot of ricotta cheese.

Ready to eat!

The ravioli is very cheesy from the ricotta and mascarpone so you mainly taste cheese with a hint of seafood. I noticed a slight fishy taste and didn’t find any real chunks of lobster which is disappointing.

The edges of the ravioli are a bit tough but the center pasta is soft.

The pasta itself was a bit tough around the edges but the inner portion of pasta is good. We paired this with a simple butter sauce and the sauce we chose went well, I don’t think this would go well with a heavy tomato sauce.

The filling is like a mushy ricotta cheese with a hint of a seafood flavor.

Cost

The lobster ravioli comes in a two-pack, each individual pack weighs 369 grams. The ravioli cost $17.49. This might seem expensive but any products that contain lobster seem to cost more. Lobster is a pretty expensive food!

A convenient dinner.

Convenience

To prepare the ravioli it just needs to be boiled for four minutes. Be careful not to boil it too long or the ravioli will break apart and burst open. It’s hard to know what to serve this with but I’d suggest a simple side salad and a garlic butter sauce.

I think a cream sauce might be overkill and this wouldn’t go well with a heavy red sauce. The best-before date is two months from the date I purchased it and the ravioli needs to be kept refrigerated.

Nutrition

Calories

Two cups of ravioli contain 470 calories, 17 grams of fat, 63 grams of carbohydrates, 11 grams of fibre, 15 grams of sugar, 19 grams of protein and a whopping 1040 milligrams of sodium.

I can’t believe how much sodium there is in this, it’s also really high in calories, fat and carbs. Some individuals may eat more than two cups so if you’re watching your calories or sodium, pay attention to portion sizes.

Ingredients

I like that real lobster is actually listed as an ingredient. The ravioli contains wheat, milk, egg and lobster and may contain crab, shrimp and salmon. There are a lot of dairy ingredients in the ravioli, I wasn’t expecting so much cheese, cream and butter!

Convenience: 9.5/10

Nutrition: 2/10 (Points for the real lobster and there being a decent amount of protein).

Overall

Walk on by!

I personally found this disappointing, it wasn’t horrible but I definitely didn’t like it enough to repurchase it or go back for seconds.

  1. I’m having it for lunch as a type and I am extremely disappointed. I double checked the package to make sure I bought the lobster ravioli and didn’t accidentally pick up a all ricotta/cheese one instead. There is almost zero lobster taste, and I see the smallest pieces of it inside. Next time I’ll pass on this but agree with the other reviews, just not worth it.

  2. When I was gently placing the ravioli in the boiling water, 3 of the ravioli were cut short on one side and the inner contents were exposed. I was hoping to extract them quickly, but unfortunately the contents evaporated into my water making it milky in colour. Quite angry to loose 3 from one package especially at the price of $17.99.
I agree with all other comments, that there was no taste of lobster, only cheese.
I slowly strained the water to see if there was any lobster from the 3 exposed ravioli in my cooked water, but the only thing I found was a piece of hard shell.
Very disappointed. Will not purchase again.

  4. I buy these on markdown, when my local Costco offers %5 off. On their own, they’d be pretty underwhelming. To me, they do have a perfect balance of lobster flavor and the creaminess of the ricotta.

I pair them with a sauce of finely chopped shallots cooked in brown butter and sweated with a bit of salt, then add fresh sliced sage and lemon thyme, with a bit of white wine reduced and then a tablespoon or two of lemon juice – stirred briskly to emulsify, then add the ravioli. S&P as needed to finish
