Sean and I used to get bubble tea a lot during the summer, it’s a treat we both enjoy and we’d get two different kinds and share them. I think it’s enjoyable that Costco has started carrying products that allow you to make your own bubble tea at home.

The Boba Bam Instant Boba Pack was my Costco’s first at-home bubble tea kit. Everyone loves it, so I wanted to review this Costco J Way Milk Tea Boba Variety Set. Other boba products from Costco are the Brown Sugar Boba Bars, Shaomei Boba Lovers’ Treats Frozen Bars, Tropical Fields Boba Milk Tea Mochi and the Tropical Fields Boba Milk Tea Mochi Brown Sugar Flavor.

Location in Store

I found these on an endcap in Costco. The item number is 1662501.

Taste

The box has four different flavors, class milk tea with brown sugar boba, taro milk tea with brown sugar boba, crème brûlée milk tea with caramel boba and passion fruit pineapple green tea with fruity boba. I wrote notes as I tried each one.

Classic milk tea with brown sugar boba

This has a nice sweetness with a mild tea flavor in the background. Even though I used milk for the final two ounces of liquid, I find it slightly on the watery side. The boba pearls are sweet and chewy. I rate this 7.5/10.

Taro milk tea with brown sugar boba

I went a little light on the ice on this one and still find it a bit watery. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a taro bubble tea, but the taro flavor seems slightly off to me. It isn’t bad though, there’s a good amount of sweetness and the taro tastes a bit like vanilla. It uses the same brown sugar boba pearls as the classic milk tea flavor. I rate this as 7/10.

Crème brûlée milk tea with caramel boba

I kept tweaking the recipe and used even less ice and more milk with this one. It tastes less watery but is a bit on the sweet side. That could just be the flavor though. I do find the crème brûlée milk tea pretty enjoyable. The caramel boba are tasty, but a little less caramely than I’d hoped. I rate this 8/10.

Passion fruit pineapple green tea with fruity boba

This one is a bit different because it’s not a milk tea. My first impression is that it is very sweet! Again, I went a bit lighter on the ice. The flavor of the tea is really nice despite the sweetness. I love passion fruit and pineapple and wasn’t disappointed. The boba are also very sweet – they’re basically chewy candies. I rate this 8/10.

The paper straws that come in the kit are annoying to use as paper straws always are. I found it a little bit hard to get the boba pearls up through the straws and they become a bit soggy.

I should also admit that I used whole homogenized milk to make the milk teas, so I’m sure that helped the flavor!

Cost

This kit isn’t cheap! I paid $19.99 Canadian for the kit that comes with four classic milk tea four taro milk tea, two creme brulee milk tea and two passion fruit pineapple. There’s one packet of flavored powder and one packet of boba to create one boba milk tea.

The boba and milk tea powder comes in separate packets.

Convenience

These are pretty easy to make but do take a few minutes of time to measure everything. First, you have to heat the boba using the microwave or stovetop. Next, combine two ounces of hot water with the milk tea powder in a cup and stir until it is dissolved. Once dissolved add seven ounces of ice and stir, then add two more ounces of water or milk and stir again. The passion fruit tea does not have any milk in it so during the last step you only add water.

Once the tea powder is completely mixed with ice and water/milk you add the boba packet and stir. The packages of boba and powder do not need to be refrigerated and can sit at room temperature but I would keep them away from heat.

I think kids would find making these really fun and also enjoy maybe one or two of the flavors. It’s a good way to try various milk tea boba flavors.

Ingredients

These aren’t healthy and are pretty terrible for you, there are no nutritious ingredients. There are a ton of ingredients that aren’t great for you like sugar, artificial flavors, sugars, palm kernel oil, glucose syrup and just a ton of chemicals and additives. If you’re very health-conscious, I’d steer clear of these.

Overall

Give it a try!

Overall I’m impressed with this kit. You might have to play around with the recipe a bit to get the most out of it, but it makes pretty good bubble tea without too much effort. The biggest thing it has going against it is that the Boba Bam kit is a little bit better and a little bit more convenient.

Have you tried these? What did you think of them?

  1. Natalie, it is odd that you stated there is no nutrition be, and then when it comes to the nutrition list to do that is an eight out of 10? What’s with that? Is this tea has no nutrition why would you list it at 8/10 for nutrition? Also, these, definitely sound over-priced!

    • Actually, at least in America, they’re a lot cheaper than what you’d pay at a boba shop. Here it sold for around $16 a pack, which means less than $2 a serving before you adjust for the price of milk. Average cost for a similar size serving at most boba places I’ve been starts at $5, sometimes more for other flavors. If you’re a big fan it’s worth it. I’m just sad my local store stopped carrying it!
