Spiced rum and coke is a popular mixed drink. Costco is known for its amazingly affordable and delicious booze. Is the Costco Kirkland Signature Original Spiced Rum worth picking up? How does it compare to Captain Morgan? Find out here!
Spiced rum isn’t my first choice for alcoholic drinks and I seldomly pick it over tequila but I’m on a mission to try all the Kirkland Signature liquors. I recently picked up this Costco spiced rum to review and also use to make Halloween cocktails!
Other Costco liquors I’ve reviewed are the Kirkland Signature Vodka, Kirkland Signature Scotch and Whiskey, Kirkland Signature Anejo Tequila, Kirkland Signature Silver Tequila, Kirkland Signature Premium Golden Margarita and the Kirkland Signature Strawberry Margarita.
Location in Store
You can find this in the Costco liquor store. The item number is 350913.
Taste
I did a taste test with the Costco rum versus Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum. I found the Kirkland Signature Spiced Rum a bit smoother than the Captain Morgan’s despite the much higher alcohol content. It has a really strong, almost artificial vanilla flavor and a buttery, sweet aroma.
Mixed with coke, the Kirkland Spiced Rum has a stronger alcohol taste than the Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, but it also seems to have a stronger artificial vanilla flavor. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum tastes smoother and less fake vanilla to me.
I made a new cocktail recipe called a Pineapple Mule from Captain Morgan’s website, the Kirkland Spiced Rum is a bit overpowering in the drink, though the drink is still quite tasty. I added extra pineapple juice and enjoyed it.
Cost
The 1.75-liter bottle of Kirkland Signature Original Spiced Rum costs $47.89 Canadian at Costco which is pretty reasonable for a decent-quality spiced rum.
A 1.75-liter bottle of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum costs $53.99 Canadian at my local liquor store, so the Costco brand rum is a tad cheaper!
Serving Suggestions
I don’t recommend this as a sipping rum but it works well in mixed drinks. Some drink suggestions are a dark and stormy, rum and coke, rum and ginger ale or rum and cream soda even!
I think the vanilla flavor is very strong so whatever you’re mixing this spiced rum with, make sure it tastes okay with vanilla.
Scoring
Taste: 7/10
Cost: 9/10
Overall
Give it a try!
This isn’t the kind of spiced rum I’m going to stow away for special occasions. It’s the kind of spiced rum I’d buy for a party or mix with soda. I prefer Captain Morgan over Kirkland Signature Original Spiced Rum, which is surprising because I find the Costco brand is usually my preferred choice.
Have you tried the Costco spiced rum? What do you think of it?

As a liquor sampler, I was lucky enough to do the new Kirkland Spiced Rum a few weeks ago What a massive improvement over the last version which had little taste to it. This one is vanilla forward and knocks Captain Morgan out of the park. All customers tasting it had positive comments. The only downside is Costco has it priced higher than Captain Morgan so some are opting to buy that one instead.
For the $/ quantity/quality/proof, in Florida anyways this is a win all day! 1.75/94 proof/$13.99/ tastes excellent on rocks. 🤷♂️
i seen they have the kirkland spiced back. bought it was excided. came right home made me a drink. they have changed the ALCOHOL TO 40%. AND ITS GOT A CANDY TYPE TAEST. WHY DID THEY RUIN A GOOD THING. WILL NOT BY ANY MORE WOULD LIKE TO GIVE IT BACK TO THEM. GOSH.
This rum is not great compared to my favourite Brugal anjejo from Dom Rep. As I unable to get it currently in the UK. I thought, I’d give this “Carribean Rum” from Costco a go. I will of course drink it but it’s not for me. To me it’s like a weak tasting Capt Morgans.
We have not bean able to get Kirkland spiced rum in Santa Rosa Ca. or Petaluma Ca do not no why wot is the reason ?
With the switch in producers from St. Croix to Kentucky, Costco has lost a long time spiced rum buyer. While it may be better than CM spiced, it now tastes like a “bottom shelf” no name rum. Although $14+ here in AZ, I’ll spend the few extra dollars for a better spiced rum. Although not available in Canada, the 12 year aged Kirkland Panama rum (not spiced) is a real gem on the taste buds and we’re already on our second bottle.
I agree on the quality. I feel for you on the price, at my Costco it cost $12.99 for a 1.75 Ltr.
Went & bought 16 bottles bc they will longer carry it!
I love the Kirkland Spiced Rum. My bar was this & light rum.
I am sorry my Costco isn’t carrying it for over a year now.
Are they going to bring it back?
Try it with root beer! My favorite rum is El Dorado but I will try the Kirkland brand.
Mmm! I love a good root beer.
The Kirkland Spiced rum has a vanilla overtone and the characteristic sweet cane flavour of a spiced rum and you can’t beat the price point.
I much prefer it over the taste of Captain Morgan, which I find rough and not worth purchasing despite its huge marketing share. My preferred Spiced Rum would be would be Sailor Jerrys which is far, far superior but also premium & pricey so can’t compare! In conclusion Kirkland over Captain Morgan by far!!!!!!!
I totally agree. I am not found of Captain Morgan’s. But live Kirkland.
I even like it in my Mojitos. I don’t buy Captain Morgan because the taste.
I wish Costco would bring it back into stock.
Me to buddy
I agree I dislike captain Morgan but Kirkland isn’t to bad, not my first choice as I’m a whiskey guy but it’s not bad and is very drinkable. Side note the Kirkland whisky is really good and some of the best I’ve had in its price point much better then crown royal
Just bought a bottle…awful! bad taste like turpentine. Trying to find receipt to take back.
I really like the Costco spiced rum over Captain Morgan. My husband and I find the flavor smooth with nice spice and mixes well. Our favorite is mixing it with orange/ passion fruit juice. Our cost in Hawaii is $13.00
Agreed-straight up with a wedge of lime squeezed is my favorite nighttime quaff
We can’t get Costco liquor in BC for some archaic, BCLB reason. I envy you! lol
I know! BC has different liquor laws! If you’re ever in Alberta you’ll have to check out Costco.
